Some may have seen this but it's worth the read. Karl Blade engages a blog discussing in part the Newell. His comments start about 3/4/ down the page .... Worth the read..

Different strokes for different folks. Good reading Jimmy. The guy brags about the DD. Well that is what most of us have, and a lot of extras such as chrome piping which the other brands do not have. But if I'm not mistaken, after 07 the DD like Cat was not highway approved. I think they are now in some horsepowers. My 07 was the last Cat in a Freightliner chassis, and after that they started using Cummins. It seems I have read somewhere that they do now offer a DD and the chassis is many thousand of dollars more than with a Cummins. At least the particular MH I was reading about was offered both ways and with the DD it was much more expensive. HP I do not remember. I have no problem with a Cummins or a Cat. I have owned all three now and they are all darn good engines. I have always bought the coach that suits me best. The engine is second for me. This guy also stated that DD horsepower could be increase to 600. That might be true, but increasing HP does not increase torque. Torque will remain the same. Torque is what we diesel owners want not HP.
1850lbs of torque in the pre EGR DD 60......
Larry, I don't have my DD booklet here, but I thought it was around 1450-1500 lbs. However you might be correct.
Karl did a great work with that response. Great read.
My readout on my Ddec maxes torque at 1650
Marc, I think you are correct. I'm probably thinking about the ISM 450 Cummins, which is what Foretravel used in the early 2000s. It is about 1450 lbs.
Was impressed with the response also, it's pretty easy to only get muddy in those exchanges.
The poster Cody is an active member on one of the bus conversion forums that I followed for a number of years. About five years ago, he and Karl got into a similar conversation on that forum. Karl posted an eloquent response then also.

I am not knocking the self converter. It is a romantic notion to build your own. I did get into a bit of flame when I mildly suggested that there was no way that a person could buy a used commercial shell and self convert for what they could buy a used Newell of the same caliber of accoutrements.

I love this forum !!!! Unlike the bus conversion forum, or the RV net forum, I don't see folks participating in snipey differences of opinion. Thank you all for keeping it that way.
Read a lot of the thread and was very impressed by Karl's responses.
