Full Version: trouble starting genny

Hi, any advise here would be great!
my power tech genny won't start from any of the remote switches, either the switch above the drivers area, from the silver leaf panel or direct on the genny.
If i hold the switch on it flashes the green light 4 times which states that its not seeing AC, i have no idea what this means!
the oil and water levels are good so i don't think its a safety cut out.
I can hot wire the genny from the solenoid with the stop arm cable tied open to keep it running, it then runs fine and operates correctly. the only problem is i have to leave the coach to start it up and shut it downs it would be much nicer to use the internal switches again!!
any help or direction gratefully received!

I have a Kohler so we start with some differences. With that said I had the same thing happen. On mine there are four slow blow fuses on the unit control head. One of those fuses was blown which was not allowing the blower to start so the genset would not stay running.

Safety switch on fire extinguisher?
i had a similar problem twice, one was the coolant level was low andante sensor wasn't letting it run. the other was what was mentioned earlier about the fire extinguisher safety switch wasn't working and that was because the air circulation fan froze up allowing the genes compartment to get hot enough to brake the extinguisher activator   filled the coolant reservoir to fix one problem and replaced the record fan and extinguisher to fix the other.
I caution you against the hotwire technique for anything other than diagnostics. You defeat all of the safety shutdown features. If you do have a problem such as low or no oil pressure, then it could get expensive quick.

I am not saying you do have a serious problem. Just raising the issue so you make informed decisions about the work around.

I must admit i agree and having read the posts above i realised i have by passed the fire suppression system etc which is not very sensible!
However the suggestions from the other guys have given me some ideas to go a check next time I'm with the coach.
Just need to find the extinguisher safety system to see if its that as the oils and water levels are good.

What do you do to check the extinguisher? is it a case of unplugging and plugging in again or wiggling the wires! or replacement of the unit? the gauge says its all good on the extinguisher unit. thanks Rob
Our Kohler quit us on the way to Vegas a few years ago. We ended up having to drive down to Phoenix from 2 am to 8 am to avoid the daytime heat with no generator running no AC. Lofton Equipment, the Kohler dealer in Phoenix was great! They had to replace a worn slip ring and brushes. Still wouldn't make power. They changed control boards twice to no avail. Finally around 6 pm the tech found that a spade connector was broken. It had been taped over so it was not visible. Fixed it and we had power! Around a year later had trouble again. I tried to diagnose it but quickly got stumped. Drove back to Lofton in Phoenix. The tech found a bad diode in a wire. I thought it was just a connector. Was thrilled that parts bill was under $10. My point being that sometimes the pros are not a bad way to go on some stuff. Can be a lot faster and cheaper than blindly taking stabs in the dark at stuff.
