Well Good news. The shaft broke clean off. Don't know why yet. I hope it was something slow that finally went, because I'm a little worried about a problem that could snap a half inch shaft.

The pump shaft sheared right off. Looks like a small defect in the shaft may have been the starting point for the shearing. I didn't annotate the pics but the one where you see the shaft piece shows a little rust spot on one if the splines.

The splined bearings look good too, but I'm changing the bearing. I'll have the old one as a spare.

Out of all of this, the "best" news is that there are no spline teeth in the oil. Also, it looks like this was the original pump.
More later.

Yes a C15 MXS not a C-15 they are different, yes not an uncommon event though, I remember taking my gear out of the engine and trying to source the Web via the number on the gear, but when they put the bearing on it and put it in a box the part number changes.

6I-4575 6I4575 is the gear/shaft with splines but no bearing

Should I understand that the issue manifests itself in the C15 MXS (regen, beginning Jan 2007 on) and not the C-15 (pre-regen, ending December 2006)?  Or is the differentiation between C15 (single turbo) and C-15 (sequential turbos)? Asking because I am fortunate to have a December 2006 casting C-15 without regen.

Thanks!

Got the parts from Newell. The pump is a re-man unit. Thanks to Cambri at Newell. She found a source for it. I've searched and could not find it myself. She has connections.....

Ian, I'm going to carry a replacement shaft. If thus ever happens again I don't wany to be stuck on the road or a truck stop for a week. More later.

Yippee, no core charge. My damaged pump is all mine!!! Now if I get 2 extra shafts I'll have  a pump and can repair the new one. BTW, I thought that I got a reman unit installed. I was wrong. It was a new unit.

Bob -

Thanks. I didn't want to log in to Cat using your number so I can't tell the casting year.  Does yours have regen (mine does not)?

Nice work Bob! Where the shaft broke seems to an area they intend to shear, glad your back on the road.

Sea Note,

Yes, mine is a regen model. It has one turbo, no DEF. I had some DPF sensor problems when I first got it. Turns out the sensors were open. It needed a sensor box. So there's a story there too. I called my local CAT dealer in Orlando (I spend the winter in Clermont) and they now refuse to work on RVs. So no other CAT location(at least in central Florida) would either. So I called CAT for how to proceed, and they directed me to the Freightliner dealer on the north side of town. Got it done there, but it took a few days and people that said custom RV wiring harnesses were involved (they weren't). Finally I talked to the right person and they got the standard CAT parts (which had been on the DPF from the start). Funny how dealers try to rip people off. I'm sure there would have been extra charges for "custom" emissions wiring and parts. I had asked for all my old parts.

Coming up, The final(?) chapter in this episode of Voyage To The Bottom Of The Wallet (hahahahahaha... couldn't resist)
