plumbing leaks - qcj - 11-04-2013

I have the complete cover panel off the water manifold to repair a larger leak and have since found 3 more smaller slow drip leaks. I get one fixed and here comes another. The first one was the 90 at the top of the cut offs, so I ordered some seals and a new 90 from Newell. There are at least 7 of these 90s which are not common stock at Lowes or plumbing supply houses. Got that repaired, then noticed a small drip at the Head Hunter water inlet connection. Took it off and it had a small crack in the plastic threaded connection. So ordered a new one along with a check valve. Installed that and thought I was finished. Then found a small drip at the 90 that goes to the water filter, took it off and used one of the spare seals Newell send me. I am hoping this will do it. I am now contacting Chuck at Newell to order some more of the parts. They are not expensive. These are leaks I probably would have never found or paid any attention to if I had not had the panel off. So if the floor of the water compartment has any signs of dampness you probably have a leak. Chappell

        [attachment=1637]Tom,
I will try to explain the situation. In the first photo there are 3 gray 1" nuts at the top and the one on the right was leaking. So I took it off and inside there was a badly worn seal in the shape of a cone. The second photo is the nut looking inside of it. An O ring would not work because it had to be much thicker. I checked with MOT and several other places with no avail. So I decided to try something else that might work as in photo 3. It still leaked. There is only about 3/8" of threads above housing. Needed more to prevent leak with this method. So called Newell and told Chuck my problem and he said would sent me a couple of seals and a Nut with the 90 that they used now. What they used now is all brass and worked great. The cone shaped rubber seal also worked with the old gray plastic that is on mine. The 2 seals and the brass fitting that Chuck sent me was less than $20.00 including shipping. Since I used what he sent me I ordered 2 more seal and a fitting today to have on have in my might need box. Chappell

    Tom,
I just took a photo of what it looks like with the new Newell part. I think I've finished and going to close everything up today. Also the nut size is 3/4" not 1" as stated in my above post. It was way past my bed time when I posted last night. Chappell
