I just let my valve soak in some CLR. This cleaned the Check Valve (a Check Valve only allows flow in one direction) and was as good as new. To check I would suggest putting a hose on the side that has the arrow so you can prove or disprove the Check Valve.
I am even more of a cheapskate than Tom, go figure!

good choice as long as it isnt leaking. mine was actually leaking....ha
