Try the following, it says to short pins A & M at the diagnostic plug which should be near the steering wheel. Then count the number of flashes at the CEL (yellow check engine light), then read from the chart.

forest, i would assume the ddec2 works the same as the ddec1 for this?

i know my scanner does ddec1 and ddec2 only so i assume so

Oops ! It's a nice warm chinook day so had another look at the problem ,looked all over the drivers area for the DDec terminal and could not find it , maybe I have to remove a panel ? I removed the battery cable and it fooled the system , it ran for a few minutes before the lights came on and shut down . Then I checked the rad coolant and found it was barely above the core , and then I noticed the antifreez level sensor that is not too far down from the top of the rad. I hope that's all that was wrong I'll know when I top it up in a few days !

Coolant level could be the reason. I had added a 2 gallon overflow tank to my '93 and that solved the low coolant problem. I bought the tank from Plastic Specialties (if I remember) and had to add a spigot by using a heat gun. Really pretty easy.

It seems that the rad was just a bit low , thats a fairly high tech system for 1987 makes it very hard to blow this thing up by not watching your gauges!
I still can't find the ddec terminal I even phoned newell the tech said that I might have to remove a panel near the throttle pedal, does that sound right ?

My 1992 diagnostic plug is above the throttle, mounted to the bottom of the dash. It is wide and not very tall so it hides easily. It could been unscrewed and gotten pushed out of the way, either up behind the dash above the throttle or over to the right behind the console.

Mine too is above the throttle under the dash and is grey and about an inch and a half wide and an inch high

I managed to remove the rug covered panel around the throttle but still can not find the computer connector ! There is a very large wire bundel but no terminal , it might help if someone knows how many wires are attached to this illusive thing ?
At least I will be able to change some burned out bulbs now ! Thanks

On my '92 it looks like 7 wires.  3 green, 1 red, 2 grey and 1 black and white.
