Out with the Duo Therm - MAXPOWER - 02-20-2017

Hello. Does anyone know if there is a direct replacement for the old Duo Therm that does not require modifying the exterior of the coach. One that uses the existing intake or exhaust. Has anyone abandoned the 3 propane heaters for an aqua hot? If so can they go inside the closet where the water heater and one heater is?

On our 86 we removed the gas heaters " mainly because one caught on fire and was shooting flames out of the exhaust port of the coach" and replaced with radiant heaters the one in the front and back of the coach were electric the one under our refrigerator was a propane fire place style we replaced the couch and shelf unit behind the captains chair and added the first heater behind the chair but this being said we either run a gen set or were plugged in to shore power 99% of the time and we also live in southern oklahoma ...... from what i've read on installs of the aqua hot systems and the access you should have to the bottom of your coach it's doable but not a cheap fix ..... and the AH is a world of nice in our new coach a lot of advantages .....

Thanks for the reply. I have read a few stories of the Duo Therm catching fire so that is the reason for searching other heating sources. If I go propane heaters I'm hoping  to find ones that will utilize the same intake and exhaust. The $6000 price tag is hard to swallow for an aqua hot.

Max, our 78 Newell had Suburban propane furnaces. I was never unhappy with those. Our 93 had two suburban furnaces installed but never hooked up because a mid-build change to all electric heat was made.i removed the furnaces and still have one of them if u are interested you can PM me.

I talked to Newell today and they recommended using atwood heaters. I'm not sure which route to go. I have serious reservations about cutting large holes in the side of my coach. Does anyone else have experience with swapping out the old heaters on a classic?

The previous owner of my '86 removed the propane heaters and installed a diesel fired coolant heater, Proheat X45. The nice thing about it is you don't have to cut any holes, you use the existing coolant lines. Mine is mounted in the storage bay in front of the drivers side front wheel. Small radiators and fans were placed where the old propane heaters were.
