Newell Coach Numbers - Fulltiming - 12-02-2012

Newell's are frequently recognized by their coach number. A little history:

Newell purchased The Streamline Travel Home division of Streamline Trailers in 1966 and moved the operation from California to Miami, Oklahoma. The first coaches Mr. Newell built still carried the Streamline name but during 1967 he began using the Newell name.

Between 1966 and 1982, Newell's were not numbered. By 1983 about 384 coaches had been built. Beginning in 1983, Newell began a new internal numbering system beginning with Coach 001. Finding the coach number on the 1983-1989 coaches can be a game of hide and seek. Sometimes it was on the bottom of the engine bay doors, sometimes on wooden pieces inside the interior only visible once you start disassembling things. The coach number was incorporated into the VIN with the first Series 2000, a 1990 model built in April of 1989, #214. In 2007, the coach numbering was adjusted to account for the unnumbered 384 early coaches so they skipped numbers 815-1199 and resumed with coach 1200. Numbers 1300-1399 were skipped for superstition reasons as Newell was concerned those might be an issue to some buyers. Newell is now in the late 1400's with coach 1475 advertised for sale recently.

As I am always trying to update my information, if anyone that finds a coach number on a 1983-1989, please post it so I can add it to my information. I best information is that 1983 was about 1-29, 1984 was about 30-59, 1985 was 60-89, 1986 was about 90-119, 1987 was about 120-155, 1988 was about 156-181 and 1989 was about 182-213. I know 007 was a 1983. Numbers 130,136, 139, 146 and 155 were 1987 models. Numbers 179 and 180 were 1988 models and, as mentioned earlier, 214 was the first 1990 model and the first Newell to carry the model number as the last three digits of the VIN (last four digits of the VIN since mid 2007 beginning with VIN 1200). Newell has reviewed this information and believes it is in the right ballpark.

As Paul Harvey used to say "And now you know the Rest of the Story".

That's interesting, Michael. Thanks.

Do you have a list somewhere of each coach? If not, that might be something interesting to have on this forum somewhere.

RE: Newell Coach Numbers - Fulltiming - 01-06-2013

I try to keep a record of Newells that are advertised for sale where they list the VIN or the coach number.  I have, with assistance from Newell and others, great information on 1990 and later VIN vs coach numbers. Prior to 1990, I have some information and some conflicting information.

213-246 were 1990's
247-280, 282, 285 and 286 were 1991's
281, 283, 284, and 287-308, 310 and 311 were 1992's
309 and 312-338 were 1993's
339-371 were 1994's
372-401 except 397 were 1995's
397 and 402-437 were 1996's
438-465 were 1997's
466-502 were 1998's
503-538 were 1999's
539-571 were 2000's
572-607 were 2001's
608-639 were 2002's
640-678 except 671 were 2003's (note there was no coach #666)
671 and 679-716 were 2004's
717-752 were 2005's
753-786 were 2006's
787-816 + 1200-1214 were 2007 (Newell skipped 383 numbers to account for the 383 Newells produced prior to the 'new numbering system'
1215-1250 were 2008's
1251-1290 were 2009's
1291-1299 and 1400-1408 were 2010's (Newell skipped 1300-1399 based on concern that some folks might be spooked over a 1300 number)
1409-1430 were 2011's
1431-1453 were 2012's
1454-1474 were 2013's
1475-1498 were 2014's
1499-1526 were 2015's
1527-1554 were 2016's
1555-1565 and 1600-1614 were 2017's (Newell skipped 1566-1599 during federal testing on the new p50 Series)
1615-1636 were 2018's
1637-1664 were 2019's
1665-1694 were 2020's
1695-1715 were 2021's
1716-???? are 2022's

If you have information that would suggest an error in the above, please let me know.  I would appreciate the information.

I will provide an additional write up on when some of the major equipment changes took place as they were rarely consistent with a model year change.

Michael,
I found this interesting, so I'll pass it on. Coach number 538 was the last 1999 model built. It was the only pre 2000 coach that was built ORIGINALLY with the new smiley face front end which is commonly thought to have began with the first 2000 model.

RE: Newell Coach Numbers - Fulltiming - 01-07-2013

Good to know. I have annotated my spreadsheet with that information. Thanks Steve!

RE: Newell Coach Numbers - folivier - 01-07-2013

Michael, my coach #337 shows date of manufacture of 12/92 on the VIN tag. But don't think that is correct since it also shows me having a tag axle.

RE: Newell Coach Numbers - Fulltiming - 01-07-2013

Forest, 12/92 is indeed possible and likely for the last 1993 model. My 1992 is one of the first 1/3 of the 1992 units and it was manufactured in March, 1991. Newell frequently has indicated a model year as running the year after the manufacture date. As an example of this, one of the first 2013 model Newells was completed by 1/10/12 (that is when it showed up with photos on their website for sale) and the 2014's are already available.

I do have a question for you Forest. What are the 3 digits of your VIN following 1N9? That gives the length in feet and inches, i.e. mine is 436 which is 43' 6". I have seen your coach listed as 38', 39' and 40'. Those 3 digits will tell the story according to what Newell measured it. Since 1980, a VIN beginning with 1N9 indicates it was manufactured by Newell, although the following three digits indicating the length was a practice only begun by Newell with the 1990 models as far as I know. I know of a 1979 model that has a VIN starting with 3610RE and a 1980 beginning with 1N9602 which is obviously a Newell but obviously NOT a 60 foot.

RE: Newell Coach Numbers - HoosierDaddy - 01-07-2013

Hi Michael,
My Newell was listed as a 1993. The vin is 1n9450X8Xp1011316. Your information indicates that it may have been the first of the 1993 model year. I have found several oddities concerning this coach. It was purchased new by the Steve Miller Band for use as an entertainer bus. It is all electric which is very common for entertainer buses (they must navigate in cities where tunnell passage is required but not allowed if you have LP on board) and was built with a rear lounge and 8 bunks in the center. There were 2 lp furnaces installed but never hooked up suggesting that the purpose of this coach was changed mid-stream.

RE: Newell Coach Numbers - Fulltiming - 01-07-2013

Dean, I think the unusual Newell is one that doesn't get changed mid-stream. I have the drawing on mine that lists a number of revisions made by the Unser's during construction. Based on your VIN, your coach is 45' 0". 1993 was a transition year to all electric coaches. I have seen '93's with as small as a 10KW generator and as large as 20KW.
