I don't know that I've seen autotransfomers discussed, here, but this issue just came up on a Prevost thread. I know y'all have discussed power grids at campgrounds and your surge protectors, so wanted to share that it appears that the NFPA guidelines are being modified to restrict the use of autotransformers. This is basically not the case; that article is spreading FUD.

It's complicated, but no one is going to stop using autoformers (or autotransformers, which are something else, although sometimes you might use an autotransformer inside an autoformer) any time soon.
