50a power cord - encantotom - 10-31-2019

my 02 has a 60 foot power cord on it.  it uses the glendinning electric cord reel.

over the years it has gotten all curvy and makes it hard to go in and out of the cord reel.

it currently has an essex royal L 6/4 soow cord on it

i know the official rv cords like the one that glendinning sells are 6381 which is 3 number 6 wires and 1 number 8 for the ground.  bth way they want over 300 dollars for it with a plug on it.  i can get the 6/4 for under 2.50 a foot plus 20 bucks for a plug

but both my 02 and 99 newells have 6/4 soow.

some soow are UL listed and some are not.   any opinions on that?

how long is the cord on yours?

RE: 50a power cord - Guy - 10-31-2019

2 years ago I changed out the 30 + year old power cord. 6/4 SO with  50 ft of new 6/4 Soow . Several times I have needed nearly all 50 ft to get to a power pedestal. Of course our old coach doesn't have any hi tech winder upper, but the insulation of the red, black, white and green conductors had begun to fail. The insulation was coming off the conductors in tiny pieces.

The scary thing is that the problem did not become evident until I changed out the 50 amp plug and notice the degraded conductors. A direct short to ground was coming soon if I had not seen the problem. The outer black jacket looked fine.  BTW, I have since discovered that the same portable cord is used on my front mounted gen set 35 ft to the transfer case. It also needs to be changed. That  is a project that I am not looking forward to.

60ish feet on length. Really comes in handy if you have to park in a spot backwards. I have used 55+ feet a number of times.

it appears the cord on both coaches is the non UL listed one the UL listed cord is alot bigger around and not sure will work with the glendinng reel

The old cord will make a nice extension cord or 2

Our cord is 50 feet, and I carry two 25-foot extensions. In two years I have used a single extension twice. I have never used both extensions, except parked in front of my house for a few weeks before we left!

The extensions are expensive and heavy. I should probably jettison one of them.
