best contact cement for ceiling trim? - encantotom - 07-26-2021

when i bought my coach 10 years ago, the ceiling trim that runs down the middle that is about 8 inches wide and flares out (goes from bedroom to entry) was broken.  so i had a new one made with the same laminate i used in my bedroom and it is mounted to a piece of plexiglass.

it came down after all these years.  i used standard contact cement like we used on making our bed for laminate on it.

i need to re attach it to the ceiling.  what is the best product to use?  needs to be something that grabs and holds instantly like contact cement as there is no way i could prop the whole thing up.

it is about 8 feet long.

any super wisdom here?

tom

Tom,
I have the "Palm Springs" Vitricore ceiling that is an oval with a strip down the middle of the coach and a circle with lines in the bedroom... oh and all over the place little pieces. I have reglued most of it at this point. If you were to take it all down, you could use 3m Trim adhesive (spray both sides, wait till tacky and stick it up. Works great. HOWEVER, overspray is a big issue.

I have been using Gorilla Glue in a squeeze bottle. used VERY sparingly and spread evenly it won;t squeeze out and when dry will stay where it's placed. I use 2x4's and press clamps (the ones that you can reverse...harbor freight)

of an appropriate length. Put them under some pressure and let dry overnight. If you cannot get the squeeze bottle far enough in the crevice to glue, buy a set of blunt tipped syringes

and just fill them up, use them till you're done and toss in the trash.

The MOST import thing is NOT to use too much. A little dab will do ya. I spread it with a popsicle stick if it's "globby"

Hope this helps.

I just replaced the laminate in the door casing. I used Loctite Power Grab. It has held for 1 week so far!

yea i know about all of those. but i really dont have a good way to evenly hold it to the ceiling. thats why i am looking for a commercial grade contact cement that will just grab and stay with no bracing.

Tom

This is the glue we used to hold wood segments together prior to turning on a lathe.  Sets up in seconds.  This comes in thin, medium, and thick.  Thin is like water and is difficult to control the application.

Tom,

I have used the common Weldwood contact adhesive, applied to both surfaces, with success.

Test whatever you are going to use on a scrap piece of the laminate if you can. You don’t want your new piece to craze from the solvent in the adhesive.
