You may think you were not fast enough, but imagine how much worse it could have been. Good job on doing the best to avoid that tire! We find debris on the highway everyday here. yesterday it was a 10' ladder in the center lane, the day before a mattress and today a 100' spool of hose in the right lane. I came home today to find shards of tire bands stretching from the first house on my street and up the block about 10 houses more. My driveway apron was littered with it. I was thinking WTF or who the F could have just kept going like that... Anyway, glad you are both safe.
