Living room slide pop-up floor coming up un-even - cfree3 - 05-27-2022

We have a 1997 Newell with a HWH living room slide-out.  We have the floor that goes up and down as the slide goes in and out.  It started to come up crooked on the dinette side where it ended up about an inch lower than it should be on the stationary side of the coach.  See picture.  We spoke to Newell and they feel it could be a worn out bushing located under the floor under the couch.

Has anyone had to find the bushing they may be talking about?

Thanks for the help!

Rick, open the bay doors on the driver side, and look up at the ceiling. All those foam insulation pieces can be carefully removed if you cut the tape with a razor knife. Removing the ceiling tiles will give you access to the floor mechanism, IF the slide is OUT. If the slide is in, all you will see is the bottom of the slide out. This includes the ceiling over the AirCon unit.

It’s all speculation until you get a visual on the mechanism.

So why did one of the service techs say we had to take out the couch and it was under the floor there? What would be there?

There may be access holes from the top.

On our coach #525....under the driver side salon couch is an access panel that runs lengthwise front to aft that is about 30" long.  One can see the panel if the drawers are out.  Inside that panel is an actuator....that may be the bushings the Newell Techs are referring.  With the slide out is there any hydraulic fluid leaking in that area?

RE: Living room slide pop-up floor coming up un-even - cfree3 - 05-29-2022

We had to pull the living room slide out in for our spring trip back to Wisconsin and when it came in this last time there was some major grinding but it did come in.

We have pulled down the insulation on the dinette side of the slideout and found a major failure of a part. It kind of looks somewhat like the hydraulic pin casings that house the locking pins for the slides.

As you can see from the picture, one bolt has totally pulled out of the metal and the other bolt has bent.

We're not sure if this failure was the beginning of our problem or if a problem with the actuator and/or possible worn out bushing could have caused this part to fail. So our next step is to take out the couch and see what we can find under the access panel.

We don't know if we will be able to get the slide out to go back out with this part broken as it is. Do you think we would be able to get the slide out to go back out?? We are in rainy Wisconsin and are not undercover so we can't have the slide out 1/2 way out or anything.

We're not sure how to access this broken part with the slide out in. Is there any access below the dinette?

Thanks for your help!!

That is part of the mechanism that raises and lowers the floor.

The slide lock pins are on top of the slide out, there are no locking pins on the bottom of the slide.

I don’t have any input on whether the slide will go out, or more importantly come back in.

The hydraulic system is very powerful and will bend or break most of the things in the way.

Richard is so right about the hydraulics being powerful.....it will bend/break things. Having said that, stating the obvious, the correct position of each sequence is tantamount to the next operation. Hard to say the correct sequence of cascading failures caused your situation. I do know for sure there is no access under the dinette to this area as there is only plywood flooring there.

My two cents worth: if the slide is in and the seal is keeping the water out, I would not take a chance of it not coming in again. Instead, you can probably live in it and travel until you can get it to a Newell authorized mechanic to make the repairs in a dry environment.

I agree but my husband feels he can attempt it. We will take a look with the slide in under the couch to see what may have broke on that end before we would attempt to slide the room out. We'll report what we find.
