Speedometer and Cruise Control quit - whatsnewell - 06-10-2013

This past Friday we arrived in Janesville, WI to overnight at a Walmart. As we exited the Interstate the speedo was working, and so was the cruise control. The next morning both had stopped working. Have checked fuses, and wiring inside coach, but will have to trouble shoot back to the engine compartment. Can anyone tell me where the speedometer sending unit, or sensor is on an '82 Classic?

Has been raining the past two days so haven't pursued the outdoor trouble shooting yet.

Clark I had a seedometer cable that ran from the xmision to the left side (curb) engine firewall. there was a generator that sent the siginal to the speedo. When mine quit It was a lub issue.. I took it apart and lubed the gears and replaced the wire terminals.. fixed.. your may be different.. see if yoy have a short cable running from xmision...

Doesn't appear to be a cable. Looks like a signal generator on the side of the tranny. Since the cruise control unit receives a signal from the speedo it makes sense that it is not working too. I think my speedo generator may have crapped out.

Clark,

In the past, I have sourced a signal generator for my Allison Transmission for my Foretravel speedo from these folks:

Thank you Rudy. I'm going to pull it off tomorrow morning to get the part number. First need to be sure it's the culprit.

I would wager it has a short drive. Might be broken. Maybe a lead wire. Moisture n oil also causes problems. It's just me but I enjoy taking things apart to see why it works or Not. But that's me.

Okay, I got under the coach today....always one of my favorite things.....after blocking the coach, and unscrewed the generator from the side of the transmission. I used an electric drill with a flathead screw driver attachment to spin the generator with wires still attached and the speedo read 50 mph as long as I kept spinning it, so the speedo, wiring, and generator are okay. I then pulled out the generator key, or short drive....has a round shaft with a groove on the side of it, and a paddle at the end that engages the generator when attached. It is not broken either. Since I was able to send a signal to the speedo with the generator that means the wiring, generator and speedo are in working order, and I have confirmed the generator key is intact.

There is a 4-5 inch shaft that the generator screws on to that connects to the tranny. Is it possible there is another generator key on the tranny side of the shaft? I don't have an open end wrench big enough to unscrew the cap on the tranny side of the shaft. The large crescent wrench I used to unscrew the cap holding the generator on to the other side of the shaft it too bulky to get at the other cap, so I'll have to wait on that until Spearfish when I am sure one of my fellow Gurus will have a wrench that will squeeze in there.

Ironically, this is the same issue I am dealing with on the Tachometer.....it appears the second generator key is broken, but it's hard to get at. Richard Entriken and I worked on it in Huntington, WV when we were there, but ran out of time before we had to move on to D.C.
