Genny shutting off while driving - folivier - 06-18-2013

OK, now it's my turn. Today was the first day I've run the generator while driving. Before this trip we've needed the heater. It ran fine with both a/cs running for about 2 hours. When we pulled into a rest stop for lunch it had shut off. So I started it up, it stumbled at first but fired up and ran fine while we were stopped. Then once on the road it shut off after about 20 minutes. I could start it but it was running rough and would shut off after less than a minute. If I would hold the start switch it would still stop.
We're now parked at Cabela's campground ($18/night 50amp only) so I checked the oil and it's fine. Doesn't look like any water in the racor filter. Once it cools off I'll check the radiator coolant. It did start up and run fine once we stopped, no stumbling.
One more thing to work on at the rally.

i replaced the electric fuel pump which has a checkvalve built in it. i think yours has a separate checkvalve. it can cause problems.

mine would run all day sitting still. as soon as i started moving it would cut in and out constantly.

I know this sounds dumb, but could the fuel tank vent be partially restricted?? Causing a partial vacuum? When the coach engine is running?? I know it's dumb but during its rest .. Something may have built a nest on the vent.

Not dumb Jimmy. Unfortunately I just checked and it's clear. Kinda sounds like it may be the fuel pump check valve Tom mentioned. I'll try running it again tomorrow and if it does it again I'll try to find one and change it.
The fuel filters where changed in Feb '13 just before we bought it.

Found a loose wire on fuel pump. Been driving 2 hours running fine.

Simple.... I love it.!!!

Still running great. Guess the wire on the fuel pump was barely attached and making intermittant contact.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. See you in a few days.

Folivier or anyone else,

It sounds like the generator you have is a diesel. Your generators sound like they are designed to be run while driving down the road? Mine is a gas in our 74. Do you think it is designed to run while traveling down he road, how do I tell? How do I tell if my AC units can opperate while traveling down the highway? My wife wishes we had air while traveling down the road and the generator is our only way to provide that comfort.

I did not think ours was capable of opperating while running down the road, any ideas?

Thanks, Roy...

There should be no reason you can't run your Genny and aircon while driving.

Roy, my 73 Newell had a gas generator and I drove with it running without any problem at all.
