Generator Temps
#11

Most diesel engine manufacturers use 180 as a standard (in gensets) but heavy loading can cause temperatures to raise as high as 220 occasionally. The shut down system uses switches not associated with the gauges and they range from 220 to 240, any higher and you run the risk of scoring the pistons.

If your gauge is showing 260, then there is something wrong with the sender or wiring or perhaps the gauge itself. The sender is a variable resistor to ground and higher temps lower the resistance and cause the gauge value to raise. If you jump the sender lead to ground (or negative) it will cause the gauge to go full scale.

Running with the set on is a common occurrence in Newells. If your temp is raising, look for an airflow issue like plugged radiator or loose belt or something impeding normal airflow.

Thanks Gordon, it seems as though the sender may be the culprit although this has happened only 3 times when the temp went that high and over a 4 year period that's not making put it high up on the to do list.
