#686 on Ebay at Fix It Up Price

Sorry don't know what a buttress is or does,if I under stand right 688 and up had EGR which caused the poor mpg what was the mpg before 688 and after. what about the 525 Cat with 6 speed mpg and the 600 Cat ? Is it better to have a 6 or 10 ,12 speed I was told it is hard to find some one to work on ZF trans and not as smooth as 6 speed were they right what about Cat cost to run compared to the 60 ? What is the advantage of the Spyder system if any compared to the old system ? 686 would have ZF just no steer and new brand slides I assume not HWH ? Is the rear steering worth it, any thing else ? Thank You all for your help so far.

No EGR 2001 DD 60. Mileage over about 5 years pulling a MINI is at it's worst about 7.8 and at it's best 8.9 mpg depending on terrain , air filter replacement time, driving mood ... Use all of my Alison 6 and love it. My coach was one of the final all HWH coaches and then Newell moved on to Valid for everything related. Spyder system did not exist until recently. I like the Analog aircraft switches I have just fine. The steerable tag does make a big difference in situations that are tight, but I can count those times on my hands and never had a problem bigger than unhooking and backing up a few times. No big deal......Hope this helps

The buttress is the top rail on the side of the coach running from front to back. Some of the others can chime in on the mileage of the various engines but in general, depreciation is high enough to overshadow the cost difference in fuel economy between one engine and another. If you want better fuel mileage run about 60-64 mph with the newer coaches and assume that 5-7 mpg is in the right range. Typically the newer, heavier coaches will be closer to the lower number and lighter Series 60 coaches will be at the top of the range.

All of the ZF suspension coaches have the steerable tag. If the coach does not have the steerable tag, but newer than mid-1997, it will have the Dana independent front suspension (there was one 1996, #434, with the IFS) but not by ZF. Many of the 1997's and prior had a Ridewell solid front axle build date prior to 11/1/1995.

Slides: #645, a 2003 was the first Newell with Valid slides, then #650 and after all had Valid electric slides. All Newells prior to 650 with the exception of 645, had HWH hydraulic slides or no slides.

The steering tag dramatically reduces turning radius.

has any one had a hard time getting parts for Dana ? not quite sure what was meant about depreciation ? So EGR DD60 started in 2001 to the end of 2005 when cat started to take over and their was no big drop in mpg 2001 to 2005. Was the 525 Cat OK with 6 speed ? IS the shocks upgrade worth it ?

Dana and Rockwell parts are readily available since they were used in many OTR trucks.

The value of the coach will decrease (depreciate) at an annual rate of say 8% of the current value of the coach. That is frequently the most expensive aspect of coach ownership until the coach gets to be about 20 years old. That can be as much or more than you will spend on fuel total, much less the difference between 5 mpg and 7 or 8 mpg so I personally do not consider the fuel mileage high on my criteria list. Many people spend more on annual maintenance than they do on fuel. Of course if you plan on putting 20,000-50,000 miles a year on a coach, fuel mileage does become a significant cost factor.

EGR did NOT begin until 2004 with Coach #688. Larry's 2001 does not have EGR.

There were VERY few C-12 Cats installed in Newells (typically 505 HP). While there may be a few others, I am only aware of #509 (a 1999), #653 (a 2003), #690 (a 2004) and #714 (also a 2004). There were a slightly larger number of C-13 Cats installed in Newells (typically 525 HP). Ones I am aware of are #769 (2006), #752 (2005), #748 (2005), #742 (2005) and #723 (2005). To the best of my knowledge ALL of the C-12 and C-13 Cats had Allison 6 speed transmissions. The torque was not an issue until they got to the 625 HP C-15. The Allison's could not handle 2000 + lb-ft of torque.

comparing the model year of a newell to when detroit started using EGR is not very accurate. mine is a 2002 but was bought in early 2001. and the series 60 is probably a year older than that as they sit around for a while before getting installed.

Depending on the state you have your coach registered in, and what their restrictions are, it's possible to remove the EGR and get the better mileage. There's a lot of forums out there that discuss this, with reliable and accurate information. Here's a link to one for the series 60 that doesn't involve reprogramming the ECM: http://www.uglyfixcharlotte.com/

My 2003 built coach is an example of what Tom just said. Newell used a 2001 engine in the build and I assume it's because they bought a large quantity of engines at one time and installed them spread over a few years

Tom, the link doesn't work from here, but if I cut and paste it into my browser it works. Here's a link off of eBay for the item: http://www.ebay.com/itm/EGR-Tuner-for-De...1394774479
