John, in my case, I suspected that the controller may have been the issue rather than the motor but wasn't sure so I purchased the Kwikee step upgrade kit from PPL https://www.pplmotorhomes.com/parts/ente...ir_44-8127 which includes the updated controller, motor with gearbox and arm. Since there are multiple steps during the early to mid 1990's, having the model number is important to cross reference. If you are certain it is the motor rather than the controller, you can buy just the motor assembly cheaper.

You can test the motor by just hooking it to a 12v battery via jumpers. I did that with mine & found out I just had a bad ground. Saved a few $$$ by not buying a new motor or controller first.

If your step part number's sixth digit is a 6, 7 or 8, you have the old style step made between 1999 and late 2005 to early 2006. These do not have the Integrated Motor Gear Linkage (IMGL).

Given model changes over the years, I think the surest way to get the right part is to pull the old one out, and use the number on the motor to get a replacement.

Given the corrosive nature of Florida, have you tried to manually assist the step in and out a few times. I know mine has gotten stuck on occasion. Since the way the motor works is that it "stalls" instead of using limit switches to tell it when to stop, a stuck step or sticky bushing in the step will cause it to stop working properly.

When I changed the steps on my '93 the new steps worked backwards from the old. I don't remember exactly but I had to change out the door sensor for it to work correctly. Not a big problem but just an FYI if that happens when you change out the steps.

i just took the complete guts out of a 99 this last week. the motor tested bad. it had the old style. i am replacing it with the newer style controller and motor/gearbox. it does require to adapt the plug going to the coach as it is an odd 4 pin rubber plug. i will replace it with a 4 pin delphi/packard weatherpac. i did not buy the upgrade kit as i had some spare step parts.

i replaced the motor and control unit after cutting off the old plug on the coach and putting a new delphi packard weatherpac plug on.

the steps are reversed in operation so i need to get new door plunger switch

also it chatters when going in, but not when going out, so i will pull the motor and see if there are any broken teeth on the gear
