Cat C15 Air Intake Problems and Corrections

Hello fellow Guru's 

I have been working on my 2008 Newell (1223) for about a year trying to understand its air intake system and its limitations and have finally put together a video discussing what the various problems are and what I am doing to correct the situation.

I would appreciate any comments, advice or experience with the issues discussed from any of the members.

Awesome video!

I am a little confused about your plan. ... If you stack two filters and then connect to the existing sidewall vent...will you not be back where you started from a water intrusion perspective? The air will flow straight thru but water will have no where to exit the filter?

Have you considered building a fiberglass scoop like the newer coaches?

Hi,
Very interesting, my coach #1218 625 with the ZF here in the UK does exactly the same, new filter still pulls the filter minder to full limit even on the day the new filter is fitted, I have run mine with no filter, and the filter minder does not register any vac.

Will await your findings.

Mike, I have confused myself. When I watched your video, you definitely talk about the filter being installed backwards. Just out of curiosity I went to the Donaldson site. The catalog drawings for the eco filters indicate the side port is the discharge, and the end port is the inlet. Hence my confusion. Can you help me find the literature that indicates it is the other way round?

Hi Richard,

Yes you are correct, the standard Newell fitment is inlet at the end and outlet to the turbos at the bottom, he has reversed the flow through the filter which was the whole point of his Video, even with a new filter my coach pulls enough restriction IE vacuum to trip the filter restriction indicator, I suspect the filters are just not big enough, as I tried without a filter and the indicator does not trip.

So my concern is this, if Donaldson engineered the filtration media to support air flowing through the media in one direction, and the direction is reversed, is the media engineered to adequately support the air flow WITHOUT blowing through.

On the idea of adding a second filter, that will only make a difference IF the second filter is plumbed in parallel with the first filter. If they are plumbed in series, the pressure drop will become MUCH worse. Unless Mike can find a way to open the ends of the two filters and make the assembly into one filter with a ton of surface area.

Hi Gurus,

Glad you liked the video. It was a single take and the discussion did not cover everything as well as I might have wanted.
Let me give a little more detail.

The only filter manufactured that is rated by the maker for reverse flow is Racor its part of the Parker family of products.

I do not think it is much different then the other makers products as they are all made to be replacements with specific specifications. They might have made the internal spacing on the pleats to have a bit more spaceing. I'll find out when I cut the old one open and compare. Either way, it was not correct to mount a filter in the reverse flow orientation without the filter being rated for that use. As an additional bit of information Newell is now using the Racor filters on the new coaches so they probably realized the mistake. However they are still using the other makers products in the reverse flow orientation on coaches coming in for service which is something they should not be doing.

My plan is to join 2 filters together by opening up the back wall of the first filter and joining it to a second filter essentially doubling the filter area. This would eventually be replaced with a custom canister that can take 2 cylindrical filters and form the necessary seal. I will also address where I pick up the air from to keep air temperatures within limits. Most likely it will wind up on the passenger side compartment behind the louvered door.

As an additional thought we should keep in mind that filters should last for a reasonable amount of time before needing replacement. What we should be seeing in the filter minder is a gradual climbing of the gauge as the filter fills I'm thinking an absolute minimum reading with a single filter and a proper plumbing job would be in the 10 to 12 inches range. I don't think that can be obtained until I change out the 5" elbow with something better suited. I'm thinking about having an aluminum or Stainless elbow 3D printed in powder petal.
