My guess is the .CAC or something to do with the air boost. You can spray the CAC with the engine set at fast idle to look for leaks most likely were core fit to side tubes. I will try to call you latter. I have had this happen to me several times. I have tried JB weld on the 04 and it slow down enough to get home. I have been working with the CN outfit for anew CAC. Leaving for a surgery at 7:30 will call after.
I just checked the fluids and the transmission oil looks ok, engine oil looks ok and same level as when I left yesterday. Coolant is down about 2 quarts in overflow tank. Loosened radiator cap and coolant came out so the radiator level is full. But there is a small wet spot on the ground right below one of the heater shut off valves and there is coolant leaking around that valve stem, I adjusted it and think the coolant loss might be from that. I don't see any other leaks.
I'll start the engine on high idle later and spray the CAC with soapy water to look for leaks.
Forest, I had the same leaks around the heater cut off. When I tried to cut it off it leaked even more. I cut it back on and drove on home. Order the 4 cut-offs from Newell and had Bernd replace them when he changed the coolant, with new hoses from the engine to the cut-offs only, not the ones leading to AH and heater. Solved that problem. The black handle cut-off were about 60.00 each, but if they last another 15 years I'll be happy.
Ran engine on high idle and sprayed outside of CAC with soapy water and saw no leaking. At high idle no black smoke out of exhaust.

When you said 17 psi of boost, do the vms and the mechanical gauge agree? Trying to get an idea if the manifold sensor could be an issue. The overheating and low boost black sample may or may not be part of the same issue
Well the dash boost gauge has never worked, I'm getting the 17 psi from the vms.
I spoke with a local mechanic and he said if it's only black smoke and turbo pressure doesn't drop any more then it's probably an injector, but if lose more boost and start blowing white smoke then it's probably the turbo going out.
So he said it's probably ok to drive it to Lufkin.

Just pulled into LazyL rv park in Sherman, TX.
The coach drove ok, just black smoke and some loss of power. Still only getting 17 psi boost and only seeing black smoke when 8 psi boost or higher. I added some injector cleaner to the tank but didn't seem to make any difference.
I did notice that at a rest area with the engine idling the fan wasn't turning. I unplugged the fan connector and it spun up. Plugged it back in and it went to low speed. Does the fan always run at low speed when the engine is running and go to high speed when needed? That may be part of my problem with the engine running hot at times.
yes, runs at low, then at a certain temp kicks into high speed. when mine kicks in i can watch the temp just fall.

the solenoid you unplugged is what turns it to low. by default, if it is faulty it will always run at high speed.
