On my 95 mid entry retracable steps there is a light attached to the underside. I have no power to it now as the steps are in the open position and is daylight at this time. What activates the light.

On our 96, light is on with door open or with porch light on (porch light switch on end of kitchen counter)...it is one of the switches in the door jam.
