Wanting to purchase a surge protector. Not sure if I should go portable or hard wire. Not sure which to buy, Camco, Surge Guard, Progressive or what. How difficult and where to mount a hard wire on a 1996 45' newell? Suggestions?
Thanks for any help.

I had to replace mine this past year. I went with a portable for a couple reasons. These carry a lifetime warrantee if the fail you mail them back and they repair them. If you use the hardwired version they mail you a new board and you replace it, or I guess you would have to pay somebody to replace it.
My understanding is that these devices do not like generator power, so you have to wire them in on the shore power line. I figured that it was just easier to use a portable version.
The link above was the best price I could find. A few years ago the Wanderlodge group arranged a group buy and got the EMS for even slightly less from this supplier. It is a good price as is, and was highly recommended to me.
Been very happy with our portable external, double protection since the built in one is OK. One wag said like wearing both a belt and suspenders and I know a few who do exactly that. Ours is Progressive EMS, not cheap but neither are repairs due to big surge. Here is a link to one source, there are probably others less expensive:

Thanks to both of you for the replies and info.
I ended up buying the Progressive Industries SSP50 Smart Surge
  • 240V/50A
  • 1650 joules
  • 45,000 amps
Hope this is sufficient to safe guard my coach. It is not the most expensive one.
