Newell Gurus

Full Version: Verizon Mobile slowdown

Ernie had posted some time ago that he was having difficulty with NewellGurus being ridiculously slow when he was using a Verizon mobile connection.  I was using a Verizon MiFi unit for the past week since I don't like the insecure wifi connections in hotels.  I experienced what Ernie was talking about.  Sometimes a page on NewellGurus would load quickly but most of the time after viewing a couple of pages, it would almost slow to a stop.  I was getting a 4G connection and most other sites seemed to be working without significant slowdowns but I experienced page loading lapses that I had never experienced on my home Time Warner Cable connection.

Not sure what was happening.  It almost appeared to be a DNS issue as the requested page would display in the lower left corner of the screen but it just didn't want to load.  I was using an Acer Aspire/M laptop with an Intel i5 processor with 6GB ram and a 500 GB hard drive (unfortunately running Win 8.1).
I was having trouble with Gurus Monday I think. I'm on Frontier DSL. It worked fine the next day and ever since.
we need to not assume that any time you cant get an instant response to gurus that it is the forum site. the internet is a fickle place.

however, i do believe from what i have seen that verizon does cause some issues.

i have been communicating with david brady of wanderlodgegurus who is experiencing the same thing.

trying to figure something out

btw, i am using verizon mobile too this week and sometimes it works fast and sometimes it is slow

We experienced this when we were at the Parker Strip earlier this year. Once home and off of the mobile it was normal again.
I am on fixed network and have seen the intermittent slow downs so I don't think it is strictly a Verizon issue.

Are you guys using a straight web browser on mobile to access the site? Or, do you have a dedicated MyBB app? I am using the Safari browser.

Back in my software days, we would see that a little used portion of a web site would be removed from the active memory and would take a few seconds to "spin up" after that it would be fast. As an experiment, after you see a slow down do the same thing again, and see if it is slow the second time.

cheers,
bill
i have definitely experienced it as well. dunno if it is verizon or godaddy, but yet it happens sometimes without verizon. the plan is to try a different server this weekend and see if that makes a difference. if scott can move it this weekend, there may be some service interuptions for a short time and then a day or so for the dns servers to catch up.

we will let you know.

thanks for the input. we want the forum to work as well as it can.

I have not noticed any slowdowns here in Mexico, I do know that some of the mobile carriers will throttle back your speed at their discretion.
hello all, i posted about this earlier today as well.

i need your feedback as to if it is behaving faster now for you. scott moved us to a different server with a different hosting company last nite. it takes up to a day for the dns servers to catch up but at least for me it got me to the right place this morning.

maybe i am just hopeful, but the page load times have become much faster for me this morning.

please let us know if you see better page load times and searches etc.

regards,

tom and scott
