What is the biggest starting and house battery we can use? I will need to definitely replace the starting batts and probably the house batts also. I am hoping the inverter works on #478 as I forgot to check it. The owner had a battery charger running to the start batteries and had replaced them with two regular car batteries (not 8d) ... I will check with NAPA and see what the price for IAPA discount is ...
Originally 478 came with 2 8D chassis batteries and 6 8D house batteries. Newell uses AGM batteries for both chassis batteries and house batteries when they are built.

I had NAPA Batteries and they served us well. They are now $214 each for the 1400 CCA;

My No Label Sealed 8D's tested at over 1400 CCA.

I think that they will all give a similar performance and life. My thoughts are that they are consumable and should be replaced when they start showing age or diminished performance. Our 2 Stroke Detroits need good batteries.
Didn't check SAMS since we are not members.
Recently replaced one of my chassis 8D batteries (Interstate) with one from Napa....$192 in South Lake Tahoe. The one that went bad was almost 8 years old......not too bad.
Clarke,
You may want to schedule the other for replacement. Common knowledge is that they are a "Bank" and should replaced together. Otherwise the older one could cause the new one to have a shorter life.
Just one man's humble opinion.
Steve, I agree.  I replaced both my engine batteries.  One was still OK but but did not want to take any chances. Replaced with American made Deka, 1425 CCA  $168.00 each.
