Would someone please enlighten me on what Newell Build Numbers (if that's what they are called) relate to those Classic units built during '84 thru '89? I'm actively researching for a coach built during that times and believe that knowing more about these numbers will help in the "Coaches for Sale" threads.

As I have stated before if anyone knows of a Newell of that vintage that is for sale please pass on my contact information or call me.

Prior to 1990, the Coach Number for a Newell was not easy to find. It was listed on some of the original paperwork and on the backside of some of the wood panels in the coach or on the inside of the engine compartment doors. During the 1987-1989 period, the tenth digit of the VIN is the letter representation for the model year H is 1987, J is 1988 and K is 1989. The last three digits of the VIN are the sequence number, ie 001 would be the first coach produced during that year and 022 would be the 22nd coach produced that model year. I can give you approximate coach numbers for the years in question.

These are APPROXIMATE COACH NUMBER RANGES
1987 126-159
1988 160-182
1989 182-212

While I have confirmation of several coach number/VIN combinations during these years, I have conflicting data on the exact number of coaches built during some of these years.

Beginning with the 1990 models, the last three digits of the VIN is the coach number.
Excellent.

Please note that I have expanded the years requested to include '84 to '89.
Another member called me to advise that I shouldn't exclude those years.
I'm new to this so I'll take any offered advice

Thank you,
Mike
Again, these coach number ranges are approximate:

1983   1-23
1984  24-60
1985  61-82
1986  83-156

Whenever I get solid confirmation of a VIN and coach number I update my information but this is the best information I currently have available.

On coaches prior to 1990, many coach owners have no idea what their coach number is and prior to 1983 there was no 'coach number' as a new accounting system was implemented in 1983 and they started numbering the coaches at "1". If the numbers I have are representative, there may have been a few 1983's built prior to the implementation of the new accounting system as I show 30 coaches built in 1983.
