All,
Looked and test drove Coach 1242 last week. This is the first 07/08 model that I have seen with the above engine transmission combination. I was under the impression that Newell went with ZF transmission paired with the CAT 625 because of the torque was too high for the Allison transmission. Any issues pairing the CAT 625 engine with the Allison transmission? The Allison provided smooth shifting as compared to the ZF transmission. Thanks in advance for any and all responses.

Reese
The Cat C-15 was derated on torque when paired with the Allison.

Most Newells in the 07/08 time frame had the 600 HP C-15 with 1850 lb-ft of torque when mated to the Allison. A few had the 625 HP with 1900 lb-ft of torque with the Allison in late 2008 and typical in 2009. With the ZF transmission, the 625 HP C-15's torque was typically 2050 lb-ft throughout the 07/09 time period.
The de-rated torque on the C-15's mated nicely to the Allison. No question, the Allison's were much smoother shifting than the ZF's and according to John Clark the Allison's were faster 0-60 mph than the higher torque C-15 with the ZF 10 or 12 speed transmission but the Allison couldn't keep up with the ZF's in the mountains.
Michael,
I appreciate your response to my question on the CAT and Allison combo.

Reese
We have had no problems with our CAT C-15 Allison combo. I did notice that my SilverLeaf in the overhead did show 2050 torque when I was going up a long steep pass. It sort of surprised me for I believe my Allison is only rated at 1850.
Oscar, your Silverleaf may be programmed for the 2050 version rather than the 1850 version of the Cat. If so, max torque would be erroneously displayed. Although I do not have the build sheet for your coach, according to the floorplan you do have the 600 HP 1850 lb-ft torque version of the Cat C15.
Oscar and Michael,
Thank you for providing that information on the CAT C15 and Allison pairing.

Reese

Michael,
Thanks for mentioning the build sheet in a previous post. Looked at the build sheet for 1242 and it shows that this Newell has the Allison transmission with the CAT C15 600 bhp/1850 ft. lb. torque.

Michael,

You are correct in that my coach is supposed to be 600 HP and 1850 lb-ft. That is why I was surprised to see it read 2050 lb-ft.
