Is it the vent for ayour dryer? My dryer is on the other side, but I have a vent which opens which sounds like what you described.

It should be operated with a push/pull cable in the washer/dryer compartment.
Believe that cable is not connected any more. Air pressure from the dryer blower opens the door.
