97 Newell Series 60 Detroit

At highway speed only temp gauge will jump up to about 220-230 but engine is NOT overheating as I have shot it numerous times with laser and block is 180-200, and if it was getting that hot the engine shutdown would activate. I have changed the sending unit on the engine,but no luck. Could this be a bad gauge in the dash? It only does this once you get to highway speeds over 50-60 MPH.
Has anyone else ever experienced this in the older Newell's with Series 60? Otherwise this engine has been bulletproof and runs great!!

Well I won't say you are alone. I have recently had the exact same problem, and changed the temp sender in the block with no change. I'm thinking it has to be either the gauge or a bad ground, maybe other's can comment on different solutions.

There are some threads in the drivetrain forum dealing with engine transmission temperatures and the reliability of the VDO gauges.  I think you'll find them helpful.  One I was was entitled  Engine/Xmsn temps???  From what I've read the VDO gauges are not all that accurate.  I hope that's all it is in your situation.

Look into VMSPc, the vdo gauges are not reliable. A big part of the issue is that the grounds are daisy chained
richard is being a little subtle. dont even try to fix the dash temp gauges. no way they will ever be very accurate. plus they are nonlinear anyway.

before you start or keep changing sensors, try a vmspc. i bet you will see an accurate temp. alot of us dont bother with the dash gauges and run vmps pc on a laptop or tablet.

I don't have a 90's S60, but I believe it does not come with a standard J1939 diagnostic port, but a DDEC J1709 diagnostic port. Instead of buying an adapter cable, I would suggest buying a 9 pin J1939 receptacle and hooking the 4 wires necessary yourself.

This is a Amphenol AHD10-9-1939P AHD 9-Pin, J1939 Receptacle, I'm sure there are other brands that will work as well.

That is NOT the connector that Newell uses. Perhaps another owner can give us the J number for the Newell supplied connector.

The pic is of the connector, but mine has no identification on it.

I know it is not the connector that Newell uses, but it is the standard 9 pin J1939 connection that BlueFire and VMSpec use. As opposed to finding an adapter cable to adapt from the Newell diagnostic port, I suggesting buying the receptacle and wiring it in addition to the Newell diagnostic receptacle.
