I would say my tired old eyes were looking at a radar detector.
That will come in handy in Texas. Need to keep it under 80.
I'm going to guess it to be a mileage meter. The word "level" and "abs" appears below the box. Are they just reflections?
My guess would be electric trailer brake control.

I think it is a radar detector.
The LEVEL and ABS are not reflections, that is where those two warning lights reside.
There is a trailer break controller aside the steering column.
I'll be pulling the dash apart next week looking for loose grounds, so I'll be seeing what is behind this then.
In the 1100 miles I've driven so far I've not seen this black box light up yet.
