Nothing wrong with wedge - but the DOT hates them

. A pain to check for & make slack adjustments. I'd bet there are a few official personnel that have never seen them.
I'd just love to know why they used grease - had to be a reason.

It has me baffled as well

If I recall correctly, always in doubt, I asked someone at Newell about this and the answer was that in their experience greased bearings were more reliable given the long periods of parking by motorhomes and required less checking by the driver. If a seal leaks and is unnoticed then the oil goes and bearing failure happens fast. Given the improvements in seal technology I suspect seal reliability is no longer the concern it was.

That would make perfect sense.

Yes agreed, it does make sense. The oil I used is Lucas 80/90 gear lube, its very thick and sticky almost like stp.
Even if the seal went it would take a long time to loose the oil.
Is Newell using oil in them now?

Does anyone know what year Newell started using oil in the front wheel bearings instead of grease? Mid 90's?
