A/C Failure - TMCopeland - 07-03-2021

My number 1 a/c started pulling VERY high amps on start up.  Enough so my Hughes PowerWatch would shut down.  Looked quickly and it went to 62 amps on one leg and shut off completely.  Any ideas?  I’m not an a/c specialist but am reasonably handy and will go up when weather clears and remove the cover to look for any obvious issue.
Any and all thoughts appreciated.  Happy 4th to all.

Thanks,
Terry

Locked rotor, bad compressor, or dead short.

The rotor is not turning which I why you are pulling locked rotor amps. Let’s hope for a bad connection burnt wire or blown capacitor when you pull the cover off look at the connections on the compressor and board and check too see if the capacitor is swollen and the connections you could try a capacitor from a working unit and see what happens

Thanks for the responses.  Good news/bad news - it’s raining today so can’t go up for a look but at least it’s cooler.  I’ll keep you posted on my findings.
