Help with questions - freen03 - 08-24-2021

I have 3 questions that I was hoping I could get answers for.
Thanks for any help that you can provide.

1 What was the model year that Newell started using Cummins engines?

2 What model year did they go to the 600 Cummins?

3 What year model coach did they start using the Allison transmission

RE: Help with questions - MrE - 08-24-2021

Many of the 1970's Newells were built with Cummins 555 and 903 engines coupled with Allison transmissions.

RE: Help with questions - Fulltiming - 08-24-2021

I provided an answer on Facebook but I will repeat it here.

#1401, a 2010 had the Cummins ISX 650 HP engine as did #1406 and #1408. Most, but not all of the 2011's had the ISX 650. #1450, a 2012, had the 600 HP ISX. There may have been some before that. Most if not all the 2013's had the 600 HP ISX. Allison has been the most used transmission by Newell since the 1960's. I suspect you mean after the switch to the CAT C-15 during 2006 when most Newells were equipped with ZF transmission. There never was a year that Newell didn't make some coaches with the Allison even in the 2006-2008 time period. In 2009 and 2010 the percentage of coaches equipped with the Allison transmission exceeded 50%. #1412, to the best of my knowledge was the last ZF transmission used by Newell in a new coach. Since my data is incomplete, there could be some that I have missed.

Hope that answers you questions. If not, give us some additional detail and we will try to be responsive.

Were there 903 powered wide body classics or did the 903 disappear prior to ‘86?
RvNut
Jayco 154 BH (chases us everywhere)
Wildwood 32BH (permanent lake site)
40’ Newell Classic Wide body (aspirational)

RE: Help with questions - Fulltiming - 08-28-2021

There were only a handful of 903's in 1984. Primarily Detroit Diesel 6V92's and 8V92's. After 1984, an owner could specify a 903 and Newell would provide it, an example is 1986 sequence 21, but the standard engine was the 8V92. So there may be a few out there but they would be rare and my database has few entries during that time period. It would be doubtful you would find a 40' Newell with a 903 as the lower horsepower typically relegated it to the shorter coaches.

Michael, You are a national treasure! Thanks! Honestly a ‘40 is unnecessary. Awesome information thanks!! Would enjoy swapping a VTA-903-T660 into a 38 twin bed classic wb. Probably the most impractical task around.

RE: Help with questions - MrE - 08-28-2021

Rvnut, @"Retro" transplanted 8.3L Cummins and Allison 6 speed transmissions in 2 70's era Newells. That involved switching to a side radiator, so much more complicated than what you're looking at. 1986 is the first WB, so you might be stuck with a 96".

Thanks!!

Would rear end and tranny in a 1986 Classic 905 require upgrading to handle the 660 HP 905 variant? VTA-903-T660

903 variant in a 903 I meant.

RE: Help with questions - Tf175 - 09-01-2021

What engine does the coach have now ? Google search revealed big torque for the 903 , 1950 Ft Lbs .
I think that exceeds the design limits for the Allison transmission , however , I am certainly not an expert .
The 8v92 TA we have is rated at 475 HP , I think the torque is 1100 or so .
660/1950 would be quite an increase .
