Dead alternator - Dan'L - 12-08-2022

Hello, I've got an 85 Newell, with original 8V92 in it, and my alternator appears to be dead. Anyone here change one out? It's on back of engine and local Detroit Diesel guy's have never seen this setup. Specifically wondering how it comes off.

I guess you have the old gear-driven, liquid-cooled alternator.  Is it 50-DN?
Probably difficult to find the same, exact model, but I suppose there are several options, (1) buy used/refurb. (2) try to repair/rebuild, (3) buy a substitute

The service manual for Detroit 92 series that I posted earlier at https://newellgurus.com/showthread.php?tid=6681
starting on page 1601, it describes steps/procedures for removing/installing the alternator.

My 1986 had a bad alternator. I took it to a local shop that rebuilds alternators for an estimate. When I went in to check on it, they had already rebuilt it. I was disappointed because they could have rebuilt it to a higher amperage, but it did work.

There is a place in Mesa, AZ which can rebuild it for a reasonable price. If you're interested I'll post the contact info for them. Ours quit working back in mid 2020. Took it to them and had it back in less than a week. Easy to remove, and reinstall. 3 bolts.

Do some diagnostics before you rip it out and ship it off for rebuild. The problem could be regulator or something else.

RE: Dead alternator - Tf175 - 12-10-2022

My original alternator was a Leece Neville , with built in regulator . Direct drive configuration as well.  Something like 60 Amp,  if memory serves.
Shipped it away for rebuild / upgrade to 200+ . Came back damaged . After second go around I changed to belt drive system and Delco 180 Amp.
I agree with Richard,  follow the link and troubleshoot carefully.
If I could do it over , I would have a good shop go through original alternator and leave it at that .
Good luck,
Chris
