Chassis Battery Cable - Richard - 01-15-2024

So, looking at the first pic, what would you do?
Ignore?
Wrap with Electrical Tape?
Cover with shrink tubing?
Replace the entire cable?

Just kidding. The second pic shows how bad it is inside the cable. In my era coach there is a plexiglas cover over the chassis batteries. The sharp edge of the cover caused the nick. I have no idea if the nick was a month old, a year old, or ten years old. It sure did a corrosive number on the cable.

I was lucky in that I had a few cables left over from the conversion from AGM to LiPo. One of them was the right gauge and the right length.

To replace the cable, the stainless cover that the cabling disappears into must be removed. There are way too many zip ties inside that cover to simply pull it through. Obviously one end terminates at the battery. The other end terminates at a power post inside the rear electrical cabinet. Do tie a rope to the old cable when removing to aid in pulling the new cable back through the passage.

And yeah the plexi cover is getting some modification along with some added protection on the cables.

Notice the battle scars on that vise.  Owning a Newell will do that.   Big Grin

Yep thats nasty its been there for some time, glad it did short out and cause a lot of smoke.

I would have cut the corrosion out and used a split bolt with a wad of tape covering it.  Just kidding!  Angel  That's also the trouble with covering battery cable ends with glued heat shrink.  They look great all the while covering up the green corrosion.

Perhaps we should all compare our vise photos  Big Grin  I keep trying to talk my brother in law out of an 8" Wilton Machinist Vise he has never used and is like brand new, no joy.

A bit off topic but when I plugged into our lot in Colorado one spring I could only get power from one leg of the breaker box. With no load it tested at 120vac on each leg but with a load the bad leg would drop down to 30-40 vac. Found out that the phone guys had dug a hole when they connected us and nicked one of the aluminum supply wires. This is the piece they cut out and repaired:

Same as Richard's wire above, but completely turned to aluminum oxide.

That would work in a pinch Jim if you were on the road. Spotting things like this before it becomes a bunch of smoke is a problem with many.

My battery cable has a short piece of rubber hose installed over it where the cover goes. Gives it protection. I can't take credit for it as it was there.

Ugh...yeah...that plexiglass cover gives me the creeps from the very first time I saw it...and every time since!! Cut stupidly too close for comfort, even though I've moved it back slightly to get the cables more room.

If ya'll need an incredible resource for an American company... BatteryCablesUSA.com has every type of cable you need. They'll make any custom set for you, in any gauge, with any ends, etc.

I've had sets made for my chargers with mini-Anderson quick-connectors...super cool. Top notch company with great customer service!

Steve,
Do you have any pics of charger cords with the mini connectors?

Thought you were going nuts with the Slime again, at first glance
