Alaska has so many unique experiences you just have to explore and you'll find them. We met the ex-mayor of the North Slope Borough (Barrow Island) and his wife and had a great visit. Then later found out about the controversary surrounding them! In Wiseman we rented a cabin for a couple nights and met Clutch, a retired hard rock miner, who had a small museum. We visited him for a few hours and left with some sourdough starter that dates back into the late 1800's. We still have it and Cindy makes an incredible bread using it.
In Valdez there is a great wildlife museum, in Fairbanks don't miss the car museum!
The northern lights are a wonder to see. Just have to get up each night at 2am and look up to hope to see them. There are a couple websites that give the forecast.
A couple things we didn't manage to do was visit some of the islands because the ferry workers went on strike. And see the polar bears but that would have to be in the late fall and we couldn't stay that long. I would have loved to see the Aleutians since my dad was stationed there during WWII bombing Japan.
Interesting point here at our cabin our new fire chief grew up in Dutch Harbor.
Richard keep us informed as your trip progresses!
