Independent starter battery size for 20kw gen??
#11

I am also doing a 48V Growatt conversion. I was planning to do what Jack and others have suggested and charge the 12v house from the 48v via a Victron solar converter. As I disassembled the old system it occurred to me that I could use my now useless Freedom 458 invertor/charger to charge the 12V 8d AGM house batts only which also starts the generator. It is already in place and hard wired to the 240 V breaker box via a 30 amp breaker. I believe that would also allow for continued availability of the battery merge if the engine batts got low.

You must not be the only person that was unhappy with the way the victron prioritized the power supplied, as they have upgrade the firmware to do exactly as you describe.  I have installed a Growatt in a system a year or so ago and really like them (especially the price) but since we “moochdock” at the kids house in California and they only have 15 amp power , Victron’s additional feature of limiting shore power amps and assisting with the difference made them the only choice.
I have the solar wind priority and it doesn't do what its said to do fully, been working with other people with the same problem and you will see also until you select inverter only on the vrm portal they system will not totally utilize solar availability. I've tried it all, read more comments and ideas than I care to even limiting grid current which works but you have to be careful with that if you forget to raise it back up at night as the aquahot will zap your batteries. If you figure it out give me the details please.

Yes, I am using a solar controller to charge my 12V engine battery from the 48V.  I think the reason I did that was the output for 1 unit could be higher than available, and it was also programmable from within the victron app.

I really like being able to program the output as well as being able to see history of power usage.  It came in handy when I had a slide seal blow out, I could tell how much extra power was being used by the 12v air compressor so I could determine if I had to worry about the amount of time it was blown before I replaced it.  It turned out to be less than 2 days!
