As many of you know I'm selling my house and moving to Maine. I bought coach 435 last fall and have done most of the repairs it needed before winter. Airbags and tires are almost completely replaced. Waiting on 4 more airbags for the drives. Tires are uniroyal all the way around and not horrible on price.
The first weekend selling the house was rough with loading up 5 people and 4 dogs and being gone while they do open houses and showings. I decided it's time... loaded everything we needed into the coach and away we went.
Drove about 50 miles and stopped just to check everything and saw belts hanging out of the rear hatch. Looks like the dash air conditioner compressor is seized up. Now I'm 50 miles from the nearest parts store so 100 miles round trip I might as well keep going. Turned on the generator and made sure the inverter was charging everything and continued down the road. The next 150 miles were trouble free. Made it to my destination. A friend's place about 30 miles from Homer Alaska.
The driver commander on the dash said I was getting about 5.5MPG way better than I thought it would get.
Since I bought the coach in the fall I didn't want to get water in the system since it had been dry for years already. On Saturday my buddy and I tackled that. Honestly it went better than I thought. The water filter housing had been frozen at some point and pulled all the threads so major leak there. One 3/4 sharkbite and thay problem was solved. All the shut off valves were drippy but a quick snug up with a socket fixed that. The city fill regulator was leaking out the top and bottom connectors. We removed that and soldered some new copper pieces and almost got it fixed. The bottom connection is leak free but the top connection busshing was to far gone to save. This concluded Saturday.
Yesterday I had to drive our pickup back to the house and get my son from his grandparents house so I got fittings to replace the upper connection. Water should be flowing trouble free today.
Now that water can come in everything needs to leave as well. The air valves were locked up and stuck in place so we took those apart and cleaned everything up and reassembled with silicone grease. Slide like champs now. At least by hand. Seems I've got an air leak from the 110 compressor I need to locate.
To the sewer hose connection the simple solution would be to find the right fitting but I've searched everywhere and I'm not fond of the cup idea. I purchased a 3 inch fitting saver reamer and will be boring out the old fitting and gluing in a 3 inch Valterra connection. Then all readily available sewer hoses will work as they should.
By the end of the day I should have a fully functional coach. Or I'm going to need to rebuild all the valve connections from the black tank and Grey water bypass.
Let's hope for the first outcome. Either way Coach 435 is back on the road after her 6 year vacation in a heated storage garage.

I'm not full timing but do enjoy several months at a time on the road. So not sure where to post the following.

I have discovered a weakness in my preparation of traveling into colder weather. We are currently in Amarillo TX and they have been experiencing a bit of a cold snap this week, having single digits overnight and wind chill to a minus 4 +/-. My coach 784's weakness is at the generator compartment. I should have looped a Aquahot line or a extension from my engine coolant lines into the Hush box and along the fuel lines. My fuel tank and fuel is saying it's at 22 degrees and I had not, till now, added any additives to keep my fuel from gelling. Currently the Gen set will not start due to fuel gelling. Running my Cat engine recirculates the fuel and gets fuel warmer, while running, and brought up 150 gallons to 30 degrees in about 10 minutes of fast idling.

The Hush box is the only compartment that is not piped into the Aquahot. I have been able to keep the coach comfy and the Preheater on the Cat engine at about 110 degrees.

Yes, I know, why travel during these temperatures? The answer.... I do not like being confined to rules and common sense LOL

This info is atleast 10 years old so..... We were working travel assignments in the medical field and typically 6 months at a minimum and most places a year plus.
Avalon Campground in Clearwater/St Pete was very nice with lots of nice people and quiet. LOTS of Canadians for some reason.
Key Largo Kampground and Marina. VERY tight spaces with lots of weekenders including teenage tent campers and lots of mosquitos. But you are within walking distance of THE KMart and Publix grocery store. We were there in the height of summer and didn't meet any of the other campers.
Souther Comfort in Homestead. The park was OK. Met quite a few other campers there. Lots of them had motorcycles as well and there were lots of get togethers. The area left a little to be desired and the local 'utes were often seen skulking around. Had a couple of clunker bicycles stolen while there. Spaces to fit most any size rig and they had a large field for storage as well.
Campers Cove in Key Largo is a very small Mom n Pop park with tight spaces and not much room for your Tow'd. Not much in the way of amenities (basic showers, laundry), BUT we stayed there for over 3 YEARS!!!! Most people there were snowbirds and kept their lots year 'round. Very strong community atmosphere and everyone helped each other. They have a small marina with great rates for the residents and some of the best sunsets around. We still miss it all these years later and long to go back.

So far so good! Temps are in the single digits and dropping into the negitives at night. Couple of take aways so far is to ensure the front 110v compressor bay is heated and covered or it freezes solid . The water bay built in electric heaters are no way close to keeping the bay above freezing, requiring an extra electric heater down low. The rear slide below the head of the bed where the water lines enter the coach from below will freeze, requiring another electric heater under the head of the bed. So much ice has built on the sides of the slides that the coach will be stationary until breakup in spring. So I went and purchased a class B - 4 season coach by Xplorer a 228 model to get my RV and camping fix in this winter while in Alaska!
My wife wasn't going so the day before I left I, dumped and flushed the holding tanks. Maybe the valve was open for 10 or 15 minutes max. Anyway the next morning I was up and on my way to the airport in Houston by 5am. About an hour after I got to John Wayne airport in Oakland, California my, wife called frantic saying after her morning bathroom visit she went to the kitchen to start breakfast then was on her way back to the bedroom to get dressed and out of the corner of her eye she, saw a rat in the toilet bowl...Closed the lid so it couldn't get out ran around frantically trying to figure out what to do. Finally grabbed a handful of plastic walmart bags opened the lid reached in grabbed the rat and took him outside. I would have just flushed him and filled the tank half full and drained again. I thought it was pretty funny she, didn't...... Anyway don't leave those valves open for too long as critters do live in sewers..

Elaine and I purchased our 1982 Newell Classic coach from Fred Hornbacher, the 2nd owner, on March 1, 2008 with the intent of eventually living and traveling full time in her. At the time of purchase our coach had 103,500 miles on her Detroit Diesel 6v92TA. We now have close to 175,000 miles on the odometer, almost 13 years later.

On February 1, 2011 that full time dream became reality. We leased out our home in Ontario, CA for a year, and became camp hosts at Rancho Jurupa Regional Park near Riverside, CA with a one year commitment, before we began to travel full time. Neither of us had yet retired, but by October of that year we both had done so. On February 1, 2012 we began our full time travels, and leased our home out for another year. Our first task was to have a 300 watt solar system installed on our coach courtesy A.M. Solar out of Springfield, OR. They have mobile technicians, and one of them, Mike Sylvester, did the installation at the Escapee Park in Aguanga, CA (near Temecula) where he and his wife wintered each year.
From Mesa, AZ we headed south into Texas to visit friends, including Elaine's sister, Phyllis, who lives near Tyler, TX. Just as we arrived there at Phyllis' home our gear driven water pump main seal failed gushing gallons of coolant onto the ground. With Tom's help we found an exact replacement on eBay, had it shipped from California to Tyler, and had it installed in 8 days....I did the removal and installation.
From there we headed further south to Austin, TX to courtesy park at the home of Michael and Georgia Day near Lake Travis. They were the first Newell owners we met back in 2008. We also visited with in-laws Glenn and Laureen Parker, on Elaine's side of the family (Laureen is her sister). Glenn and Laureen bought a 1984 Newell 9 years later and traveled with us this past summer.

We covered some 12,000+ miles in 2012 crossing the country 3 times over that time span. We have slowed down considerably since then averaging fewer than 5,000 miles per year since then. We continue to be amazed at how well our 1982 Newell Classic has held up to full time living over those 10 years, and how well she handles all types of weather from below freezing for months at a time, to a very wet climate here on Coastal Oregon where we are currently finishing up another camp host job.

This 12 months has seen us replacing all of our major appliances.....the Dometic fridge, the Splendide washer/dryer, the water heater (converted to tankless), two TV's, our Dometic toilet, and basement Norcold pull out fridge. The water heater, washer/dryer, and Norcold were over 38 years old when they failed. The fridge was around 14-15 years old, and the toilet was 11 years old.

Over those ten years we have served as camp hosts 8 times. We have worked the sugar beet harvest in Montana, the INDY 500, worked as cashiers at general stores twice (Yellowstone and Grand Canyon), worked Peak Season at Amazon 3 times, and spent a lot of time boondocking in Utah, Arizona and the California desert. We have visited, in our Newell, all lower 48 states. We have flown to Hawaii, and had planned to spend last summer in Alaska traveling in our Newell when the pandemic struck.

Since that initial solar installation of two 150 watt panels we returned to A.M. Solar in 2015 to have two more 160 watt panels installed to give us a total of 620 watts now, which is just about perfect. We may add one more panel, but that decision of for another day.

I could literally write thousands of words about our travels.....in fact I have done just that. I began blogging daily about our full time lifestyle back in October of 2012. That blog can be found at whatsnewell.blogspot.com if you are interested in how our life on the road has evolved over that time. There are many ways to fulltime, and our choices on how that looks are just that.....our choices.....they work for us, but may not work for you. How you do it is totally up to you....there is no right, or wrong. Hope you will check us out.

Many thanks to Michael and Georgia Day, Tom and Darlene McCloud, Richard and Rhonda Entriken, and the many other current and former Newell owners who have befriended us (David and Denise Zonker, Dean Stoops, Pam Regenall, Forest and Cindy Olivier, Tuga Gaidry, Matt and Connie Russo). Our life would not be complete without you in it.

Whenever you log into Newell Gurus I am sure you have noticed the masthead pictures of four Newells of various vintages. Our Newell is the one on the far right. Going from left to right you will see the 1982 Newell Classic owned by Steve Ward (Prarieschooner)....our coaches are 1 serial number apart, and were both delivered to brothers (last name Law) in March of 1982....we call them the sister coaches.

Sadly, We are no longer Newell owners! Earlier this year we sold our wonderful 94 Newell #365 to Matt & Leslie Whaley from the Lake of the Ozarks area. Very nice folks and Matt has been busy bringing her to their liking. Here's a good lesson for any of you who decide it's time to sell your Coach. If you meet someone that walks into your coach and really like it, and they're nice, excited folks, give them a price that gives them a lot of room for making it the way they like it, including those little repairs, and you'll both be Happy Campers! I hope the Whaleys enjoy having a Newell as much as we have.

I'll continue to browse on here just because, well, you never know the future! Anyway, I'd like to thank all of you for the open arms and sincere caring for a novice in 1999 and making him feel comfortable as a new Newell owner. Although I'd been in the RV business for 20 years, the Newell was a completely new experience and I spent 21 years and 308,000 miles with it and it was a wonderful, educational experience because of all your help and the wonderful people at Newell and the 24/7 help line! There's none better!

Thank You to the many of you that I've personally met and A very special Thank You to Tom & Darlene. (The Newell towels Darlene made for us did not go with the coach) I wish I could have visited your beautiful new Newell Hospitality Center You guys are the best!
I wish we had a few days to spend here. All spaces are 200 ft pull thrus, 50 amp full hook ups. Pretty level, with picnic benches and patios. Usable wifi, laundry, cafe , rally facilities ,and wonderful hosts. If you are a birder ,star gazer or hiker, or off roader, this is the place.
It is rated as the 2nd darkest place in america, and I believe it. You can't see your feet without a flashlight at night. Many campers here have brought their telescopes with them.

I was going through some of the original paperwork for our 1982 Newell today and discovered that the original date of delivery to Leonard Law of Denver, CO (the original owner) was March 1, 1982.....ironically, we took delivery as the third owners on March 1, 2008....26 years to the day after it was delivered to Leonard Law. Our Detroit Diesel 6V92 silver edition has over 158,000 miles on her and she is still going strong.....actually, she is just barely broken in. Leonard owned the coach for 22 years keeping it in a climate controlled barn when not in use for all for all of that time before he sold it to a man named Fred Hornbacher of Palm Springs, CA who sold it to us on March 1, 2008. Fred stored in inside for 2 of the four years he owned it, so it has only been stored outside since 2006.....still has the original paint and awnings.......amazing! We have been living full time in our Newell since February 1, 2011, and have been travelling full time since February 1, 2012......these Newells stand up quite well to full time use. You can read our blog (Whatsnewell) about our full time life!

The internet allows so many to easily share in the wanderlust lifestyle of others. Some here have blogs, many other fulltime RVers do too.

At some point the cherished fulltime RV lifestyle evolves into a new direction. Many, like some here, return to a sticks & bricks life, with part time use of their Newell. Some, like the Wynns, Our Odyssey and Technomadia, extend their exploration to the water, becoming boat people.

I'm sure there are plenty that for health reasons exchange their RV for a retirement community. It is interesting how Escapees, in Livingston, TX, offers skilled care inside the RV, for those temporarily disabled.

Being a planner, my mind wanders ahead questioning how long we will be fulltime Newell explorers. My estimate is a decade.
