Lost a generator water pump on our first long trip, was able to get it fixed a day later, then genset ran fine for a couple days.
Then early one morning it made some noises and shut down. It will re start, runs up to rpm, then slows to an idle then shuts down again..
Engine sounds fine, there was a round piece of plastic in generator compartment, and black dust around head unit..
Can I be lucky and just need brushes or something? I'm a mechanic, but not familiar with gensets.
I tried calling martin but no response yet.

What are the experts thoughts on keeping this old unit going vs. updating to something newer?

So I am currently on a 2 week trip over the Christmas and New Years holidays. The trip has been a bit of a challenge when it comes to Newell issues. This thread will focus on my generator dying on me. So you know the symptoms, it was running and it started sputtering and died. I assumed it was a plugged fuel filter, I had issues with some crud in the fuel for the main engine so I figured it got to the generator. I went ahead and changed both fuel filters on the generator and tried starting again. No joy, I am not getting any fuel. I try the primer switch on the generator which runs the fuel pump, I hear the fuel pump running, now puzzled, still no fuel. I figure maybe just lost prime, so I pressurize the fuel tank with my vacuum blowing air into the fuel tank, pulled the line off the output of the generator fuel pump and its just trickling out. So I go ahead and pull the fuel pump, fuel pump is running but when I open it up the actual pumping part spins slowly and if you put your finger on it, it stops all together and barely spins. So I start hunting the fuel pump. The only thing on the pump are a few numbers, at least it had those as a starting spot, turns out the original is a Carter fuel pump #4070BD. I google this and I am only getting this part available to be ordered online. While searching a Delphi pump came up at Napa, the Delphi pump I got and used was part #FE0553. The only small hurdle was that the 12v plugs from the old pump were too large to stay on the terminals of the Delphi pump, but the Delphi pump came with new plugs so I cut the wires and spliced on the new plugs and then I was still having no luck getting any fuel. I had to pressurize the fuel tank again to get fuel to the pump, once I got fuel in the pump it started pumping good.

All of this was not so easy as I was doing this in Tennessee and the temps here were hovering in the 30's during the day and teens and 20s at night. I ran out of light the first day and we pulled up stakes and ran over to a local campground for the night so we could charge up and have power. That was another bit of a debacle, I stopped at the campground to check in and shut off the coach. Came back out and went to start the coach and click click, no start. Seems I merged the house batteries with my house batteries and I think my house bank pulled my start bank down. Not sure what to do at this point, my trailer with all my tools etc was at our property about 10 min away but was not sure what I had that I could do, the generator was not working so I could not charge the batteries. I called AAA and luckily they were there in about 20 minutes, the guy pulled out a tiny little jump pack and I was skeptical but we both decided to give it a try. Well it did the trick, it was enough and it rolled over and fired right up. The booster he used was a NOCO GB70, he mentioned there is one that is a bit larger than that one he recommend really should be used for a heavy vehicle, I think its the GB150, it has 3000 cranking amps. Anyways, that was just a small part of our trip saga. This was just one of the hurdles we were fighting.

So a synopsis of part numbers:

I have a 1987 40' coach #130. I was preparing for a trip had the generator running, ac on, a couple things plugged in and it suddenly died.
Thought maybe it was low enough on fuel, filled up both tanks, but no.
Tried restarting, it turns over fine and starts for a second then loses power to the fuel shutoff solenoid.
Ran a hot wire to the fuel shutoff runs fine but won't generate electricity.
I replaced the starter solenoid since it supplies the fuel shutoff with power, replaced the relays in the control, replaced the starter switch, replaced a few questionable ground wires, and checked what fuses I could find but still the same. Cranks won't start.
I spoke with newell and they are sure it should have had a fire extinguisher in the generator compartment, but it doesn't anymore so guessing it had been eliminated and bypassed in years past.
At this point I'm to the extent of my shade tree mechanic ability and am hoping for a little help please.
Also should mention the generator is a Kohler and was told the engine is a perkins.

I’m switching out my batteries and inverter to a 48 volt victron system. This is obviously causing me to have to rework the 12v systems in the coach. Most of what I need to accomplish can be done with a 48 to 12 volt Dc to dc converter (or actually 2) but the generator start system has me thinking an independent start battery might be the best option. I suppose I could change the generator start over to the chassis batteries (as I’m going to with the slide hydraulic motors) but I fell like having its own battery may be a good idea. I could always wire up a starter relay to the chassis batteries as a back up. Can anybody think of a reason why I shouldn’t do this and any recommendations on a battery size. Just for fun I used my 330 cca lawnmower battery and it seemed to start the generator fine, but it was a brand new battery.

It has been my practice to offload the generator for a short while prior to shutting it down reducing loading significantly thereby letting things cool down and get a breather.

However, after I upgraded to lithium batteries and added and auto gen start/stop logic to the victron GX it seems that the challenge is much more difficult and I have not been using that functionality.

The big loads on the system are the a/c systems, Aquahot if on electric heat, and battery charging.

The normal automatic logic is to turn the generator on when the battery gets low, and turns off at some point higher without regard to loading.

How important is my initial assessment/process to all of the systems, considering the only time I would want this functionality is while boondocking (my normal)?

The other day I was exercising the generator and testing for a random shutoff condition. I was going to be working in the front two bays for awhile, so I would be close by to pay attention to it when it shut off. I have a 20KW Kubota
The Genny started fine within two crank cycles and ran smooth. I ran an ac to put an 8amp load on it. No issues for about 2 hours. Then, I could hear it start to run a little rough, maybe 30 seconds for me to recognize it, started to run a little rougher, I went inside to look at the gauges, Temp good at 180, oi pressure good and it died. Tried to restart and no go. Genny was serviced last August. An hour later, the Genny started right up, ran fine.

So my questions are:
Is there a Owners manual for these things or a service manual?
From a few threads I read, It could be Low coolant, or a fuel shut off solenoid? How do I test this solenoid?
Other suggestions?

I know very little of diesels, but can certainly turn a wrench.

I feel there is probably a very simple solution to this, I’m just not able to figure it out and haven’t had luck using the search function. Normally, the generator switch above my kitchen will start the generator with no issues. However, on at least 2 separate occasions, I’ve gone to start the generator and the switch does nothing. If I push the switch down to the stop/preheat position, I can see a very subtle light dim indicating, I think, that the glow plugs are heating. However when I press the switch up to start, there is nothing. No cranking, no lights dim, absolutely nothing. I can go to the generator directly and it will start right up using the switch in the generator bay. Am I missing something? Is this a switch that’s going bad?

I could smell exhaust fumes in the coach this summer, especially with open windows. I looked at it yesterday and couldn't see anything from the front. There are very nice thermal blankets covering the exhaust. Behind the generator is a cover with 4 screws attaching it, once removed there is excellent access. I lowered the pressure into the generator airbags which dropped the generator a couple of inches. There was a lot of soot below and under the thermal blankets. The thermal blankets are held on with safety wire, cut it off to remove the blankets which were filled with soot. I started the generator and could feel a blast of air coming from the gasket between the turbo & the exhaust flange. Five nuts are used to squeeze that metal gasket, four were finger tight. When the flange opening was welded to the pipe there was a burr that kept the gasket from completely squeezing the gasket. I filed that down and ordered the gasket and nuts from Martin Generator. My backyardigan winter camping visitor says they always replace the gasket and nuts on turbo exhaust manifolds.

So I was servicing my Kohler generator with the Yanmar 4TN84TE-RKRV and I noticed my intake hose from the turbo to the intake manifold had a split in it. So I started trying to find the part online with not much luck. Could hardly even find the part diagram for this engine. So I had been contacted by a generator company here in Florida called DuraWatt generators near Ocala florida, and he said if I ever needed anything to give him a call. So I called and asked if he had this part for my Yanmar, he said he did not carry that part but suggested I call M&L Engine In Louisiana. I was going to call Martin as suggested by many on here, but the fella at Durwatt said that they are a reseller like him, not a distributor, M&L is a distributor for Yanmar. So I called them, gave them the engine number and he looked the part up and said he had some in Atlanta and could have it to me in a couple days. So I gave him my card info and he ordered it. They have been communicating with me via email to let me know that they have shipped the part and it’s on its way. So far so good. As long as it’s the correct part these guys are going to be top notch in my book.
