Well here we go. This is a critical potential hydraulic emergency notification for the early steerable tag crowd.

I'll do my best to convey the problem and yes, it is of DOT importance.

1. Symptoms
2. Troubleshooting
3. Cause
4. Cure
5. Conclusion

1. SYMPTOMS

Started out on a summertime trip looking forward to a relaxing get away. As most of us know the relaxing part may or may not happen based on the rigs behavier. Three miles from home I start merging on the highway. 1 mile later I scan my instruments and I see I'm overheating. Pull over on the shoulder, leave the rig running and head to the rear. The cooling fan not running. First thing, I pull the connector on the manifold, still no fan.

I did install the fan overide cockpit controlled switch, or if adopted, in the official Newell Gurus Glossery, the FOCS. Installing FOCS, IMO, is one of the best modifications to have in order to have some control for engine temp. Heat kills and so does my X wife when she feels the need.

Where were we? ADHD MOMENT.

She's running around 215 degrees so I milk it to the next exit 1 mile away. So since the fan is not working properly it's time to put my aviation skills to work. Check the hydraulic and coolant fluid levels, they are normal. Next I get my ball peen hammer and gently tap the manifold lightly repeatedly. Low and behold as I tap and the fan comes alive slowly. The more I tap the faster the fan responds. Within 20 secounds the monster is alive and spinning like she should. All is well so let's roll again and see how the temp is. The temp stayed around 184ish so I feel comforitable and safe operationally. So I drove it this way for the excursion.

2. TROUBLESHOOTING

Obviosly it first appears we have a spool valve that is not porting fluid properly within the manifold. First step is to pull it out for examination. Suprisingly the fluid loss was minor when I pulled it out. Maybe 10oz but not much more. I examined the spool valve and orings and don't see anything that makes my eyes bug out. Next I put my finger inside the valve like a prostrate exam. There is someting in there so I keep examing the patient. The first piece I get out is a piece of metal and the 2nd 3rd and 4th piece are too. This has to be the culprit but what the heck is it? The next move I reassemble what appears to be a big washer with an orifice drilled hole. They all fit together nicely, see pics.

It appeared that this was made intentioinally but for what purpose and where does it belong? Time to call Newell on the bat phone. I should have written down the names of the factory guys because without their knowledge this condition would forever keep me up at night.

3. Cause
The pics of this washer orifice was uploaded and they said they would get back to me. Maybe 15 minutes later I'm back live with the boys. The guy they get gives me the Paul Harvey story. So Paul says, he remembers the issue, he goes back in time when they first encountered a pulsation after they installed the ZF tag. He said when they first started with the steerable ZF tag there was a steering wheel pulsation that developed.

4. Cure
Someone thought trying to reduce it by limiting the fluid flow and effectively dampening it. There was born the washer with a hole in it for the fix. Well it worked but in my opinion the fix was not properly done. I have worked on many hydraulic systems that use restriction orifices that either were bored out to a design specification in the manifold itself. Another method is to utilize a orifice fitting threaded into the manifold itself. Either way is considered a properly approved design or device. The washer was OK if it was used for developing a fix, but only temporary prototype testing. Someone at Newell felt otherwise and used the homemade washer orifice as the cheap fix.

Anyhow, he asked if I had any pulsation issues with the steering wheel and I said I did not have any. He said, as long as there is nothing pulsating just go without it. Now we know the part of the story but there's more to it. There was a couple of other anomilies that need to be mentioned. I've had the rig for a few years and always wondered if the steerable tag was in working order. I never saw the tag wheels in my mirrors at low speed when turning so it was also on my radar to validate its operation. In addition after removing the FOD, Foreign Object Damage, the tag came alive and I could see them functioning in slow turns. That was a good moment for sure. One other condition was my front wheel steering. Sitting still there were times when I could not turn the wheels effectively. When moving slowly and driving the steering control was normal. The most pressure required is highest when you are not moving. Well that also went away. Restrictions from the floating washer parts also migrated around and induced these problems as well.

Worse case senario, I really don't want to think about but could have been catostrophic in my opinion. So my hope is to convey to all of you that have early steerable tags to be aware of this washer and I RECOMMEND, REMOVE IT ASAP.

5. Conclusion
Food for thought. There has been hydraulic fan motors that have failed and I wonder if this condition could be a canidate for some of those. Steering tag and steering wheel control problems as well for sure. Also call Newell if you think you need more information and advice. This is a real potential killer so I strongly urge that this becomes, as the FAA folks know an Emergeny AD "Airworthiness Directive". For now let's call it a Newell Service Bulliten. Unintended consiquences like this has taken down many aircraft, much more comforting pulling off to the side of the road!

Looking for information on the radiator installed in my coach with a C-13. Factory can't give me basic information. Not many C-13's out there, any info would be appreciated.

Richard gave me info from Atlas Radiator and I even spoke to the owner Larry Frederick. He's unsure if his radiators were used in the 2004-2005 builds, thought that was the timeframe when Newell sourced another supplier.
It would be nice to know if the radiators were standard sizes or if they were sized to the engines of that era. D-60's, C-13's, then C-15's.

My problem is high coolant temps. In my discussions with radiator shops they suspect build up in the radiator. I'm going to drain the coolant and attempt to place a camera in the lower pipe. not sure what I'll see. CLR makes a radiator flush, I'm considering trying to fill the radiator with the solution and hopefully dissolve any buildup.

If I replace the radiator I'd like to take the route Richard did with the TSM Ultra-Fused technology. The radiator will need to be removed and measured by the radiator shop. I will be using Bixby Radiator near Tulsa Oklahoma.

Appreciate any info, take care.

Sounds simple enough but it is a pain in the butt to replace some of these old hoses. Particularly the ones going to the air compressor head. Mine were hardened. Lower radiator hose was bulging and soft and finally the hot start engine heater hoses were original and had scars from road debris. Took me a while to cross reference the new part numbers for those. 24 gallons of coolant removed as of yesterday. Today it is over 115º so I can only do a tiny bit of work which was to remove the bottom hoses and rinse out what I could of the radiator. Inside doesn't look too bad. Not going for a full recon with this just making it reliable from a blown hose on the road. I'll crawl back inside the engine if it cools down after dinner. This job requires multiple showers a day from dripping coolant in my hair to dirt on my arms. I am hoping to reinstall the double lower hose as one assembly. It was difficult to remove it and the new hoses are stiffer. Can't imagine doing this job laying on my back. Fuhgettabouttit.

Our driver side tag axle had sheared off studs due to horrid road conditions on I93 in AZ heading from Las Vegas, down to I 40 (which is only marginally better, AZ roads are the worst in the nation). After searching for days trying to find a shop that could help, we found this shop, limped over here and they got us in first thing in the morning. I can't recommend this shop enough.

The mechanics here are knowledgeable and highly skilled. They don't waste time, or give you the run around. They are up front with their prices and give you an estimate before starting the job so you know what you are in for. If you are in Flagstaff, and can limp over to Galup, NM., do so. It will save you thousands, and the work will be done correctly and honestly.

The only con I can think of isn't their fault, but their vendors have issues getting parts shipped directly, so if they need to order parts it might delay you a couple of days, but this isn't in any way the fault of the shop.

It is obvious from their work ethic that their main concern is getting you on the road as quickly and safely as possible. They are Detroit Diesel and CAT certified. Their hourly rate is 144/hr. Everywhere we contacted in Flagstaff was 195/hr. And we left several places there because their mechanics were just standing around talking and smoking, but not working.

We are looking at an $1800 estimate for a new rim, 10 new lugs, 10 new studs, tire mount and balance. (We have since ordered the 1" Impact, and torque wrench so we can self rescue in the future.)

Hello all watching this thread. I’m editing this thread to provide current context to my original thoughts and experiences.
I hope I can save many of you thousands of dollars and hours of frustration by cutting to the chase.

My coach was built 20 years ago. I have no expectations that twenty year old parts and engineering will be fully functional today however, the past five years have proven to be very frustrating and informative for my wife and I. We have replace almost every component of our suspension and ZF RAS system. We essentially have a new coach from the floor down, the top is still beautiful.

Recently I had a radiator and CAC change. That was accomplished at Newell, thank you Newell for helping me solve problems for my coach and hopefully many others.

Changing out the CAC and radiator made a significant difference in how my engine performs but that didn’t solve the root case of the problem. I’ll get to that as well.

Recently I had an alignment performed that appears to have corrected all handling problems I’ve struggled with since I purchased #744 in late 2018 and took delivery in 2019.

I’ll expand on my alignment solution in the thread I started on that topic. I’m a very “Happy Camper” in that category as well.

Bottom line for my fellow Caterpillar owners, there are a few mechanical items that cause cooling and performance problems with our designs.

First and foremost, if you have a single V20 hydraulic pump supplying your ZF gearbox and hydraulic cooling fan motor, your engine will experience high coolant temps and ZF gearbox hydraulic flow and pressure problems. I’m sorry but this is a fact. I will debate this issue if necessary but several Newell Gurus have been along for my ride and understand the problems.

Tips for success are simple.
Replace the fan blades before they fail due to heat and age.

Increase fan blade pitch. More to that than meets the eye. The V20 pump can only handle 2500 psi pressure demand. More to that as well. You fan is set at 20° pitch. You can increase to 27.5° to help airflow but you need to modify other systems to have a winning combination.

Get out ahead of high coolant problems before you overheat your engine.

Cat 15 owners. Make sure your single V20 hydraulic pump has the proper pump and shaft to last long time.

Now back to the original thread…
Good luck!

I’m exploring what options are available to improve airflow from my cooling fan.

In my 2005 with a C13 ACERT, Newell installed a MULTI-WING Z Series Fan with “6Z” Blades. I have eight blades.

I reached out to the U.S. Multi-Wing distributors and was contacted by:
(Larry Brudzynski has retired)

Superior Turbo and Injection.
313-842-4616 Ext 604.

Larry asked me to send him pictures of my fan. He looked at the blade pitch and estimated the blades are currently set at 25°. He is recommending that I re-pitch the blades to 35°-37.5°.

Hello,
We have flown to Pittsburgh, PA to check out the 2009 Newell p2000i coach #1274 and really need a RVIA Certified inspector with experience. Newell is backed up and cannot spare any tech to fly here, so they suggested posting a call out on this forum.
If any of you know someone with these qualifications in this area or someone with these qualifications who can fly to Pittsburgh to do the full inspection, please post or direct message me with the contact information ASAP.
Thank you!
