Dash disassembled
#1

Funny how small projects can turn into big ones. I started just trying to figure out why my cigarette lighter 12v power outlet in the dash to the left of the backup camera no longer had power and the socket had come loose able to be pulled out. Getting to the back side required pulling the kick panel behind the brake pedal. I got my arm weaved back behind and screwed the ground plate back on the socket. Both power and ground wires are well connected. Still no power, but solid mounting now.

No power, lead me to disassemble the kick panel in front of the passenger seat to investigate the fuse box. 40 fuses none labeled cigarette lighter or power socket (picture attached). I did NOT check them all. Does anyone know where the fuse is?

Since I never liked the GPS power cord draped over the dash to be plugged into power socket. I decided to install a new power socket between the windshield and dash on the black plastic shelf out of sight. Since I was going to clean up the look of the GPS cord, I decided to remove 2 old cellular phone base stations. This required another kick panel removal to the left of the steering wheel. I will also relocate the CB handset as it is obnoxious.

To run the new 12v power wires out of sight, I removed the dash top. Richard, you mentioned that you cut the dash top Christmas trees and installed Velcro. Questions:
  • What brand and where did you purchase the Velcro?
  • Did you only use small sections where the Christmas trees were located, or did you cover the entire dash from the back sides?
  • Any other tips?
In the process of pulling the old cell phone wires out. I think I pulled apart a yellow wire with a black rubber butt connector that I think connected to the dash A/C selector switch. Strangely, the end of the wire was not stripped like a typical crimp type butt connector (picture attached - I just pushed the yellow wire back into the rubber butt connector for the picture). How do these work? Can I replace with crimp type?

While I have everything apart anything else I should take care of?

Do other people's projects snowball like this?  Huh
