The Department’s proposal would establish safety standards requiring all newly manufactured U.S. trucks, buses, and multipurpose passenger vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating more than 26,000 pounds to come equipped with speed limiting devices.  Motor carriers operating commercial vehicles in interstate commerce would be responsible for maintaining the speed limiting devices at or below the designated speed for the service life of the vehicle under the proposal.

Is a "multipurpose passenger vehicle" a motorhome?

I would think the RV industry lobbiest would work to exempt RVs from the limiters - or at least limit the speed to the maximum posted limit.

RVs are not commercial vehicles, so that may make a difference.

Hmmm...When the speed cop revenuers calculate the lost revenue there may be some push-back on this one!! Five over gives them reasonable cause and then once a commercial vehicle is stopped there are many opportunities to rack up taxes.....er I mean fines.

Hopefully this won't apply to us.

“While I am concerned that this rule will only apply to new vehicles and not the millions of trucks that are currently on our roads, I am pleased that the Department of Transportation has finally proposed this long-overdue requirement,” said Senator Collins.  “Speed governors will improve safety on our nation’s roadways by preventing commercial truck and bus drivers from speeding and will undoubtedly save lives of roadway users and increase the fuel efficiency of commercial vehicle fleets.”

Unfortunately, the Senators really pushing on this are from the NE where traffic is heavier and speed limits are already lower. In several articles they talk about limiters all being set for either 60, 65 or 68. Don't count on logic when 'the public good' is in play.

Very interesting. And in conflict with my personal observations. I am not in favor of flying truckers but the most prevalent problem I personally experience is two truckers obviously running on cruise control set at 65. One is barely faster than the other so they get stuck in formation for a couple of miles until one clears another. I always guessed it was a company policy or mandate. The traffic jam that causes ups the probability of a crash.

Whether its the superslab or Talladega, running at the same speed without the ability to use the happy pedal to clear another vehicle, leads to headaches.

Some of the carriers have already put speed limiters on their trucks. I think that is why we sometimes see the dreaded left-lane bandit for miles.
