Oil Leak Located
#3

Returning from a 400 mile trip, I noticed droplets of oil on my drive axle flare.

An inspection revealed the transmission output shaft seal could be the culprit.  So, today I set out to replaced the seal.  The drive shaft was removed at the transmission.  It is VERY heavy.

Next the output flange was removed and revealed rust and other debris which may have caused failure.  It does have 200,000 miles.  Richard suggested I check balance of the shaft (he is so smart) but i put a dial indicator on the shaft and did not see alarming movement of the splined shaft.

A new seal was installed and the flange replaced.  Next the drive shaft had to be bolted up.  I could not lift it and had to resort to a floor jack and what little strength i have left.  I needed help with all this.

The seal was $67 and all is back together.  This is not a project for the average guru, as I said , I had help.

Thought some of you might like to see the rear of the transmission and the process of seal replacement.  some of the pictures are oriented incorrectly so turn your head!!  The output shaft is 2" in diameter.
