Well, after experimentation on the way to get some new tires I learned that I must have changed my driving habits to be a little harder on the throttle and therefore started getting the advanced version of shifting that included the frequent appearance of the torque converter. I had been trying to maximize fuel mileage by going slow and easy on the throttle.
