Remember that on 120 volt land line power, with merge switch off, the house batteries are being charged by the inverter/charger but the chassis batteries are not being charged. Newell recommends replacing the merge solenoid regularly (once a year in most cases) but I find that on my coach that is overkill even if I leave the merge switch on 24/7. Incidentally, when you start the coach, the merge solenoid is automatically activated as long as the engine is running.
