The 1983 Newells typically used the Detroit 6V92 or the Cummins 903. By at least the middle of the 1984 model year, the Detroit 8V92 mechanical engines were being used. I believe Detroit introduced the DDEC in 1985 but I am not sure when the first DDEC 8V92 was used by Newell. I have heard that at least a few 1987 Newells had DDEC 8V92's. However, during 1988, there were wide-body Newells built with the mechanical 8V92. My 1992 was built before a couple of 1991's and it has the DDEC II 8V92. By 1994, Detroit had introduced the DDEC III in the Series 60's but Newell continued installing the 8V92's until nearly the end of the 1994 model year production. I am not sure that Detroit built 8V92's with DDEC III as it was introduced for the Series 60. The first Series 60 powered Newell that I am aware of was #363, a 1994. The 1994 models ran from #339-371. The last 8V92 installed in a Newell was #376, a 1995. As with most every thing Newell does, there is not a clean break between engine models. Newell typically buys engines in quantity and will try a new engine model in one or more coaches to see how they work out before making a mass change. In the meantime, they will use their existing supply of engines they already have on hand.
