Fuel tank capacity
#5

I have a 1999, unit #516. I was told I had a 270 gallon tank and that the genny would stop drawing fuel when the tank got down to 20 or 25%. To my surprise both of these were wrong. I was on a return trip from Alberta, Cananda and had stopped in Billings, MT. My wife wanted me to fill up with fuel, but I had calculated my fuel using the ProDriver since I didn't think the fuel gauge was reading right. I told her we had over 140 gallon left, and at 8 MPG I could make well over 800 miles. But this only works if you have a 270 gallon tank. I made it to about 30 miles north of Casper, WY. when the engine stopped and I coasted to the side of the road. I had been running the ginny for the A/C, it stopped in a short time after the big engine had stopped. Not knowing what is wrong I called the Mother Ship and they said I may be out of fuel, and I said no way. But they talked me in to running a tape measure into the tank. After it hit nothing but metal and come out dry, I believed them, so I unhooked the toad and drive the 30 miles to Casper where I buy 6, 5 gallon cans at WalMart, and fill them with fuel. Now back the 30 miles. You can't pour out of the 5 gallon cans into the top of the tank, so I fill a gallon water bottle and pour in. Now this takes some time to do and it starts to rain, so I had to stop till it eased up a bit. Next you need to prime the engine, by removing the cap from the top of the fuel filter and filling with fuel. You can start the engine from this compartment by using the emergency
starter. I got it running but it took most  of the fuel from the filter, so I turned it off. I did this 3 times before I filled it and replaced the cap. This time I had a lot of bubbles but it filled up and kept on running and I'm off the 30 miles to Casper where I filled up with 168 gallons. I also don't have the 20% safety for the ginny. Any comments?
