vmspc installation
#1

hi all,

yesterday i hard wired in my vmspc. i drilled a hole in the side of the glove compartment and mounted the control box in there with velcro.

then i ran an extension usb cable from it to under the top of the dash (had to take the dash off) so that it comes out right at where i would use it on my lap top

i ran the connection cable from the vmspc box under the dash using a feed wire over to the plug under the ignition switch. i ohmed out the wires on the plug to make sure i knew which wires did what and connected the wires to the back side of the connector.

so, it is a nice and neat installation and i dont have to have that huge plug plugged in under the dash.

I'm looking to do a vmspc on my 91, did you happen to take any pics while doing the install? On a 91 what kind of info can you get on the vmspc, I've had people tell me it's not worth it on the older coaches, that you only get about 4 different types of info, no speed, no rpms. Any thoughts.

first of all, on a 91 you get tons of info. hopefully bill is ok with me sharing a screen capture of an instrument screen of gauges i made for him for my 90 he just bought. everything on there you can monitor. plus you get engine codes.

on the series 60 you get tranny info as well as a few other things. i would not be without it on my (bills) 90 or my 02.

my install on the 02 was totally different than on the 90. there is no center console on the 02.

on the 90 i hard wired the vmspc in on the plug that is under the dash on the right side and ran the cable up to the center console top that lifts up. i put the vmspc box in that same place and ran the usb cable out to the laptop that rested on the center console.

on my 02 i had to do more dash dissasembly so it took more time.

the pre ddec engines are the ones you cannot hook a vmspc on. that would be somewhere in the late 80's

What kind of laptops or tablets do most people run, any recommendations as to where to buy the cable/box for the vmspc?

John, look at the posts under "Silverleaf VMS" and you will see more information and photos. I used an Asus 10.1" tablet which sits in front of my dash.

i just use my normal laptop. with that center console, it is a natural place to put the laptop. your dash config is very different than my 02 or chesters so putting a tablet there may or may not fit

I'm using a small netbook on the movable center console thingie. Not ideal but works until I can figure out a better way.
On my 93 I did the same as Tom.
