Tom, I think by "softener", Newell may have been talking about a deionizer like you mentioned. It does not need salt, just have to back-flush once in a while. I usually back flush 3-4 times a year unless I see spots. Then back flush right away. If full timing I would probably back flush at least monthly.

It is a filter full of ground charcoal. Some call it a water softened. The company is gone but patents design belong to large water co. I will pull my notes. You can fill or add charcoal and it still works. Our 1990 had one.

sounds like a de ionizer if it takes charcoal. even them have limited lifes before recharging the charcoal dont they?

Yes if memory serves me correctly. We bought the charcoal et. But ended up tossing it due to space for the commercisl deionization system
