Installed new Chassis batteries on wednesday and when we arrived in florida they have started to melt. What might have caused this?

Batteries wired incorrectly.
Failing voltage regulator on alternator.
Bad new battery with internal short.

Loose connections at batteries?

Was there a safety fuse in the wiring? (Large white cylinder with metal lugs).
