mystery object driving me nuts
#1

Hello all,

I'm trying to figure out what this black box is that's connected to a couple things behind our main switch panel.  I'm thinking it's something for electrical noise reduction but I'm not sure, as there is no markings on it.

It's making a very high pitched noise (really quietly) that's driving me nuts.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance
Tyler

Strictly a guess since I can’t see the connections but it appears to be the power supply for the neon tape that back lights the switches and pilot lamps.

Gordon is right. That is what it is.  They tend to buzz alot as they get older.  I got some spare parts for them from a company that makes limos in the Midwest many years ago.  Basically a high voltage transformer

Thanks guys, I appreciate the information!

I didn't realize it was neon tape.

Is it something that I can replace?

Well the richard answer is always! You could replace the transformer which would be the easiest, but the new one will eventually start to squeal too. Youl could replace the backlighting tape with dimmable leds and use the 12v coming i to the transformer directly

Thanks Richard. I'll have to get back there again to see if there was any part numbers on it. It was a while back when I was back there and don't remember there being any. It's not the most convenient place to access, especially if going through where the microwave is located.

My wife doesn't notice it and maybe most people wouldn't hear it, but when it's real quiet inside I can hear it. Almost like a mosquito buzzing in my ears lol.
